A friend at CAT told me that the D6E as well as some of the later D6D's were made in Brazil. He said that they are both good machines and that the D6's to avoid are the D6R's. He said that they are dropping like flies, mainly hydraulic failures. We had a pipeline removed from our property back in 1997 and the pipeline crew used both a D6D with an angle blade and a D6E with a K/G clearing blade. Both machines were manufactured in the South American plant in the 90's. They had no complaints about either machine. They did say that the D6E seemed to have more pushing power. That may have been because it was a newer machine. With any used machine though, try to find out the maintenance history and if possible talk to the previous owner. Hope this helps.
