my 188 engine holds 6 qts, i use 15w40, rotella or cat oil is the best, but if ya change it when it gets dirty, theyre all adequate. i use 90w gl5 in the trans/diff/finals. i've never heard of using mineral oil in them, i have had some sludge, but dont consider it a big problem. the hyd reservoir on my d310g holds almost 10 gals. i have some severe leaks in the backhoe, so i've refilled from empty quite a few times.

Suggest a search here on mineral oil. It's also called GL-1. GL-5 has additives in it that will disolve your brake linings as well as your seals. GL-1 is available here at Walmart in 5gal buckets and is cheaper than GL5. I put GL-5 in mine for about two days before I found out the damage that would be done. I have no axes to grind, just trying to be helpful as so many here have been for me.

Must use straight mineral oil in Tranny & finals. I had to flush my finals out as they were filled with sludge when I bought it. Additives in more modern oil will attack seals and cause all kinds of expensive problems. I use rotella diesel service by Shell and like it a lot. Use it in all three of my diesels and have had good service

I use 90 weight in my 310's finals, and trans. I use a regualar hydraulic oil in the hydraulic system. Some people use 20 weight motor oil. I think the hydraulic resivoir holds about three gallons. The trans/diff holds about a gallon. The trans/diff case has plugs in the side and a big plug in the top. Poor the gear oil in till it runs out the side holes. The finals hold a pint or so befor it runs out the side plug.
