I actually read allot of the threads posted on 1010's before I asked this one. I normally just post then start looking. I've just started looking at a 1010, havent found the owner yet, and was wondering if these rearend cracks I've read so much about are obvious or hidden? Where should I be looking exactly? I'm actually new to this but do have some knowledge of crawlers just not all the proper names for different areas and parts. I have a great job that takes me to allot of small, even tiny towns around the eastern half of SD, southwest MN and northwest IA. If anyone is looking for something let me know. I found the 1010 in a town of 65. Thank you again, Dan

1010 crawlers were prone to cracking the intermediate housings; i.e. the cast housings between the transmission case and the final drives. Deere updated them a long time ago to 350 housings, so if they ever broke the crawler probably has the heavier updated housings on it now. They also tend to crack the steel side-frames near where they bolt to the final drives. One other trouble spot, if the crawler has the optional hydraulic reverser, is where the reverser housing bolts to the transmission case. It this looks like it's loose, and has been loose for a long time, it's could be a major repair to fix because the locating dowells get wallowed out and subsequently the the reverser output shaft gets out of alignment with the transmission input shaft.

Dan, this goes for any of the small jd's that I'v been around. They are all good if you take care of them and treat them fair.I have seen them crack at the final drives where the bearings are located.Usually bearing will wear out and cause slop then pressure will crack housing. The area is usually all dirty under there so some might over look any crack. Two places to check, Where shaft comes out and up above where bearing is inside on shaft.Check over good !!!!!

I may be interested Robert. You say original, does that mean it's from John Deere? It needs to cover the early model with screw type track adjustment. Let me know. Thank you, Dan

Robert, Am I missing your address somewhere? When I click on your name it says your address is hidden. Try mine. Or my cell is 605-351-7265 and you can leave it on voice mail. I may get your call but the ringer stinks. Dan
