Case 350 - Steering vs Brake question

I've got a '72 Case Crawler Loader. I've had it about 8 months now. I have read a lot about the 450's and it seems most experienced operators recommend using the steering brakes to accelerate one track to turn, Not use the brakes. I just read a post where someone recommended the same thing on a 310G. Is this something that is only available on the 450's? I have 2 levers between my legs and a foot brake on the floor. No way to speed up a track on one side or the other, I don't think... Am I missing something here? I currently just got the shifter back on it, (it was stuck in to gears) and I am going to drain the finals and look at the brake linings. The machine will not stop with the foot brake, but it will if you pull back on both levers. I am guessing either the linings are shot, or it is out of adjustment.

Newer case dozers have 2 steering levers on the left console used to steer the tractor. The levers control a 2 speed gear box (one for each track). To turn left the operator would put the right track gearbox into high gear and leave the left gearbox in low. I believe the gearboxes also contain a reverse clutch so the tracks can be counter rotated for a spot turn. I dont think a 1972 tractor will have this arrangement, rather the old school steering clutch/brake system.

Derek, Thanks for the explanation. That is how I figured they were setup from what I have read and I have never used one personally. Jon

Jon, case 310 and 350 do not have steering clutch and brake set up , the handles that you pull are brakes on a controlled differential steering system . If you would like some pictures of how it works, send me an email . They use the clark trans which came from the old cletrac patent. The larger case crawlers used a torque converter and power shift transmission and depending on which model they had 6 , 8 , or 10 clutches all multiple disc and hydraulically operated. george

Jon, I have a 310E. The steering is accomplished on the 310 with steering brake levers between the legs. If you can steer ok, and pulling back on the levers will stop the machine, then your brakes are fine. You need to adjust the linkage to the foot brake, located under the floor pan near the seat. It's a simple adjustment. If you remove the floor pan, you can easily see how to adjust the foot brake. I'm interested in learning more about your shifter being stuck in two gears. What were the symptoms? How did you fix it? I've got a problem where I can't go forward in 1st gear, but the other forward gears work fine. When in reverse, I'm hearing a gringing noise coming from around the tranny/differential. I lost my right brake/steering ability also. Brad

Brad, Here are the symtoms of my tranny being stuck in 2 gears.. actually it was stuck in one gear and when I went to put it in 1st, I was then in 2 gears. Symptom was when the shift lever was in neutral, the machine would move. I could not get it into 2nd gear and when I put it into 1st, the machine would not move. In the tranny there are 2 different gears on rails. One slides forward and back for 2nd and 3rd gear, and then one slide forward and back to go into first or out of first. I had parked the machine in 3rd gear and then it got really cold... I went to use the machine and it was pretty cold out. The shifter forks came off of the 2nd to 3rd gear and it (the gear) was stuck there. I pulled the shifter plate off of the side of the tranny and was able to get it back in line. Hope this helps. Jon
