Case 450, I Think The Manual Is Missing Some Pages

Hello all, I've got a '68 model Case 450 loader. I've only had it a couple of months now and have not had much time on it yet. I've been working out the various little bugs that are commonly found in these old machines. The other week the left brake got partially stuck on. I realised what was going on after I smelled it getting hot and saw a little smoke comming up from under the seat. I've got a full set of Case service manuals and according to the manual, removing the brake assy is just a matter of undoing 4 nuts and pulling it out. I wish. They did not mention that the master cylinders and pedal assys have to come out too. The thing that I did not like though is that the bracket for the High/Low shifter is right dead in the way. Its welded in place too. No way around it, I had to cut the bracket to give the brake assy enough clearance to pull it off the splined shaft. I'm guessing the manual was not written around doing this in the field. Overall the manual is pretty good though. I was just surprised that what I though would be an hour job ended up taking the whole afternoon. At least it was not raining. John

I have a case d450 dozer that I just redid the brakes on. I did not take out as a unit the way the manual explains. I took the unit apart on the machine. The three bolts that hold the front cover on. That way you can get out without cutting the shifter off. When you go to put back together, you will find this way much easier also. The brake disc fit very snug and I could not emagine trying to get the back disc on while inside the unit. I took out the plug on the front cover and used a large socket to lightly tap the front disc on. I also used a rope over the top to hold the unit while I lined it up and tapped on. It took me a couple of days but I completely rebiuld them. The parts prices were very high. Hope this helps. Good Luck

Ric, I considered rebuilding the units while the assemblies were still installed in the machine. I'll probably do that for the right side since that has not been removed yet. The manual suggested it was pretty simple and as I kept going I could not believe that they would not mention the shifter! Oh well. Its still a good machine and the manuals do appear to be pretty good. Thanks for your response. John
