Hey all, Looking at a pretty well used IH 3414 TLB. I can't really justify the big price tag on a good one, so I'm thinking about trying to patch this on back up. Just wanting it for occasional use around the farm. I know they're kind of an orphan, but does anyone have parts, or a parts source I could check out? Mainly engine. It has the diesel engine. A D-239, I believe. It chucked a rod, but the crank looks salvagable. Any IH AG tractors use the same 239? Any and all history or info appreceiated. Thanks a bunch. Mike

The early IH 3414 is the industrial version of the British/Indian B-414 agricultural tractor and uses the BD-154 cubic inch engine. I have a B-275 ag. tractor that came originally with the BD-144 engine, and the 154 was a direct bolt-in. So, it seems, if you do have the 154 engine, there are lots of engines out there that will bolt in. B-275, B-414, TD-5 dozer, and more. Maybe your's is a later version using a bigger engine? I've never seen one, but I've worked on IH ag. tractors with a 239 diesel, e.g. the 574 and the 647.

Thanks for the replies. Everything I've found so far says it should have the BD-154, but the owner claims it's a D-239. (He has a stack of manuals for it about 18" high.) I don't know the model year, but it has the gold 3414 badge on the lower radiator cowl instead of the upper steering cowl, like most pics I've seen. History is vague, but supposedly the previous owner put a new clutch, upper swing pivot cap, and main pump in it right before this guy got it. The current owner put several new hoses on, one bull gear it the diff., flushed the entire system, filters, all fresh $ Hytran $, put in new disc brakes, bought a second smaller rear bucket, dug one basement, did some small trench work, about 200 hrs, in all, and then the rod went. After checking on parts to fix it, he decided to just go buy a JD 310, and leave the IH sit. It has sat outside with the pan off for 2 1/2 years, but it's full of anti-freeze, and the Hytrans looks clean. Shifter boot is there, and it has a canopy top, doesn't look to have taken on any rainwater. (Karen: I'm e-mailing you for parts info.) If I decide against fixing it, anybody know what it's worth (ballpark) as a parts machine? Maybe I can "leverage" my way up to a better TLB by just moving it on, as-is. Thanks, Mike

Hi Mike, if you have to pre-heat the engine with glow-plugs, before starting, it's a BD 154. If it's a direct start, it's a 239. Late 3400 serie have 179 and 239 cu. Bernard le mécano Québec Canada

Thanks Bernard. Pretty sure it's a D-239. No pre-heat, that I could see. Turns out, it's also a 3514 instead of a 3414. That would probably explain the engine. 99% of my info was over the phone with the owner, and he kept refering to it as a 3414! I had looked at it late last fall, and knew it was a ??14 TLB. LOL! I went today with my camera, waded 1/4 mile of mud, and looked it over alot closer than I did last fall. Most everything he told me, that I can see, looks fairly accurate, except for the model no. Here's the tag #'s. MODEL:INTERNATIONAL 3514 SERIAL# 2789 D I'm guessing a 1968? I crawled under it (in the mud!) and ALL the rods are intact, with loose caps.(previous inspection) Dug a little further, and looks like #3 just spun a bearing. I'm not to knowledgable about what these diesel tractors will, or won't tolerate, but if it were a gasser, I'd figure just re-size the big end, and use the old con rod. The crank should save. Big suprise came on the way back to town, when I stopped by the Case-IH dealer to price parts! Seems the D-239 was used in a few AG tractors also, and parts are available, but $$$. Just the front seal, and a new oil pump was enough for me to start hunting a place to sit down! LOL! (list price, anyway) I know they HAVE to be cheaper outside of the dealer..... ..right? Thanks for all the help. Mike

Hi Mike,if it's a 239,4 cylinders engine, it have a balancer below the crankshaft. The balancer is driven by a ring gear on the crankshaft. The oil pan is a cast heavy one. I have rebuilted many of those engines, when i worked as mecanic for a CaseIH dealer. Bernard le mécano Québec Canada

Yep, saw that. looked similar to a starter ring gear mid-way up on the crankshaft. While I've been weighing the pros and cons of the 3514, a fellow mentioned he knew of a '70-'72? IH 3600D TLB that ran and worked real well, but had hydro problems. (won't move forward, or back) Opened it up, dumped about $2000.00 in new parts in it, worked fine, then quit moving again. Did the tear down twice, still only moved for about 1/2 a day then quit. He's done messing with it. Should I even go look at the 3600, or are hydros more of a PITA $$$ than just getting the 3514 running? They're both priced about the same. Logic says find an old Case, but budget says..... ..... ..... . Mike

Hi Mike, hydro transmissions are expensive to repair. Sometime it cost as much as fix the engine in parts. You change the charge pump, wear plates and seals kit,$4.000.00 cdn with out labor. Check for a used 239, from a farm tractor and you save money and time, may be a short block. Hydro transmission work fine but when it stop mooving, it's a mess. Bernrd le mécano Québec Canada

Thanks for the advice. I looked the 3600 over, and it's a little too big for what I was needing. (too big to get in the shop, comfortably, anyway!)
Hydros sound like more trouble and expense than I need to tackle, especially in the older machines. The owner said he had to pull the motor twice in two weeks to work on the Hydro. That was two years ago, and I could still see the aggravation on his face! He admitted crossing the hoses on the steering? pump, and blowing the new seal about 2 hrs after the last go around. Ask him what the manual suggested, he said he didn't have one. Kinda gives me an idea what the rest of the machine would be like.
Just picked up a pretty good older Ditch Witch trencher, so I have that base covered.
Still considering the 3514 for a 'hoe, but I think I'll let him set on it for a few more weeks, and take a fresh look at it then.

Again, thanks for all the advice.

Mike
