Delo 30wt motor oil sells for $313.00 in 55 gal. drums or $34.15 in 5 gal. pails here. Is there any cheaper oil suitable for a Catapillars hydralics? Thanks alvnms

Try to find a place that has the oil you need in bulk. I get Hy-tran and 15-40 from the Case dealer in Louisville, Ky. I just filled my 55 gal hy-tran for 4.95/gal and the 15-40 for 4.70. All you need is a bucket and they will fill it.

Sounds preety good to me for a good grade of oil. I've been paying over $6 for Rotella in gallons and almost $8 for Case #1. Good oil isnt cheap but hydraulic and engine repairs arent either.

And how to get used oil one asks,,, Well, get two barrels (buckets, cans, whatever)and a length of 1 inch or larger manilla rope. Set the old oil barrell bottom at the top of the empty barrel (like a step arraignment), after soaking the rope in some good oil for a spell, put one end in the top old oil barrel and the other end in the empty barrel, wait a few days and let the rope siphon the old oil into the bottom empty barrel. The manilla rope will filter out most all of the crude leaving you with clean used oil. Can't get much cheaper than that, short of getting new oil at five-finger discount. I won't attest as to its lubricating ability since it has already lost much of its lubricity (is that a word?), but that's about what you get with any used oil.

My dad told me that they used to recycle and filter the oil used in the aircraft during WWII. He was a mechanic on B17 and B25 and later on B29 aircraft./ He also stated that they were told that oil really never looses its lubricating quality, it just gets it diluted with contaminants, so they filtered the old oil and reused it.

My dad told me about cleaning oil that way. He served on board an aircraft carrier during the Korean war, said that was how they recycled the oil out of the aircraft for reuse. It must work work fairly well. He was the crew chief and he never lost a helicopter. By the way, My THANKS to all the veterans and active members of our armed forces.

This sounds like a good trick i will have to try it. We have to save all of our old oil, can't throw it on the ground anymore. If oil sits in a drum through some hot weather a lot of the crud and water settles to the bottom. It would be a good idea to keep the rope a few inches off the bottom of the feed tank.

That sounds interesting RZ. I have some almost new hyd oil in a drum, only contaminated. I will try, and maybe use two are three different ropes, I have a large grass rope on hand, will it do? Thanks alvinnms

I am no expert, but I get mine at TSC and that sounds like a fair price. You don't want to get too "cheap" or it may cost you big time in the long run. MrBill
