This message is for Goofus or anybody else that would like to comment...
The Ford 555 Backhoe that I bought has a 3cyl diesel, and a Lucus starter and solenoid, the problem is when I went to start this unit all the wires have been cut off at the solenoid with side cutters, I can only assume this was done to remove and replace the starter assembly with a new one with ease. The person from that point started the unit by jumping the solenoid, never bothered to re-attach (very dangerous)as all the safety features are by-passed. however, this is my problem, I started to put crimp on fittings on all the wires and started to figure out where they all went, not going too bad but when I attached the main feed from the solenoid to the cab switch I had tremendous arcing at the battery post. I did check to see if there was any equipment in the on posistion and found none, I have left the post clamp off untill I hear from you guy's.any suggestions will be most appreciated.

You now know it wasn't cut off for reason you thought!!! Sounds like you have a dead short to earth somewhere. Also connector at battery post is poorly attached if it is arcing when drawing current.

You are right on, but I did not connect the battery until I completed hooking up the wires to the solenoid, after which I attempted to attach the ground terminal onto the battery ground post, wow! what a sizzle, unhooked it right away until I can locate the source of the problem. Is there any way of checking the wires one at a time for a direct short... Many thanks.
