My father has Cat D-4 that has been sitting for years. The original problem was that the steering breaks or clutches were worn out. He tried to give it away a couple of years ago and found that the blade whench was stuck. The dozer is still sitting in back of the barn. My question is, how difficult is it change out the clutches?

i did my d4 in my 2 car garage back in 88 with a 20 ton hydraulic jack, and a homemade puller with a press that utilized the celing with some bracing added. and i bought the clutch linings from surplus tractor supply out of n. dakota they were made in italy but they worked good, but that was when i was young and dumb and full of ---. i wish you the best. i remember i could just look at the track and it would come off, espically when i was stuck in the mud.

Where is the d-4?? If it is in the Midwest maybe we can strike a deal. Thanks...My only cat is a two ton with a dozer blade which rubs fine mainly because it has a Chevy six cylinder and twelve volt system.

I have an old (1943) D4 that I had given up on when the pony motor give out. Then I went and bought a G1000 Minneapolis Moline and it hit me that I could pull start the old D4. It had been sitting for 4 years and had locust trees growing in the bucket. I had the thing pull started in Reverse before I had gone 500 feet. On mine, there is an adjustment for the steering clutches under the seat. There is a cover on each side and if you adjust the nut and check the steering lever you might just get it to work. Once I thought that mine was bad but the clutches had swelled and I had to adjust them to get it to work. By the way, now I park the thing on a hill with the bucket locked up and roll start the thing when I need to use it. Don't give up yet.

Not to bad a job. you will need a hoist to lift 2-300lb. take off seat fuel tank fenders. pull off top of trans. cover. unbolt both steering clutch brakes and drums lift out shaft with both steering clutches and ring gear. take to CAT shop for re build they must be pressed off and on. FRED

older D4's and maybe newer ones too the work can be done entirely at home if you're set up right. Don't take anything to Cat if you can help it-- they charge like crazy!

It takes a special puller and 25 tons of power to pull the steering clutches from the shaft and that much to put them back on .
