IH TD9 Engine

Does a IH TD9 share engines with another IH machine such as an MD or WD Farmall?

I found a TD9 right around the corner from me with a froze engine pretty cheap. The machine is in good condition besides being siezed. Two cylinders are siezed from rainwater in the stack for a few years. The head is already off and has been checked out, worked by a machine shop and is ready to go back on. I know it will need rings, pistons and liners for the two cylinders and a gasket set. Are these parts readily available and affordable enough to try to resurect this machine?

My opinion for what it is worth, get rid of it now. Your headaches are just beginning. Buy an old AC 5 or 6, they are an all around much better machine. I had bought a basket case TD9 with four way bucket. I got it for a heck of a price, $500.
I next paid a guy $1000 to rebuild the motor. Then came the feat of putting the motor in. They are heavy and there is limited space to work. They had the 335 motor in the older ones and those are still around.

Try on Red Power Dr Ernie and M_B Cat have several ways of unsticking motors and the WD-9has same basic engine also that engine was used in graders and track cranes so it is fairly common

Im not sure what year your machine is, but I have a 1969 TD9-B series (with Drott loader). It has a 282 Diesel which was a common IH engine. They used it in a lot of different farm equipment, tractors etc (there was a gas and diesel version). If this is what you have, then it is very plentiful and parts are widely available. If it's an older machine, then I don't know much about them. But I'm sure parts are available for the older motors too. If you go to the redpower link provided below, they'll definitely be able to help you.

Good luck with your new crawler.

This machine is one of the old ones. It starts on Gas and switches to Diesel after warming up.

I had also thought, is there another IH engine that would be basically a bolt in re-power. An engine swap would probably not be cost effective is my first guess. Any insight would be appreciated.

We just bought a TD-9 of the same vintage. There is one difference. The original engine is gone and a 354 Perkins is in it and it fits well. If I was doing a restoration I wouldn't think of the above but for use it works real well.

What did it take to bolt the Perk' up to the ol''Binder?

This machine would be a working unit first.

We did not do the deed but from appearances they made motor mounts on the front and maybe a plate to the bell housing. I have no idea how the clutch hooks up, but it works. There is not a cobbled appearance.

Dr, I really don't know anything about the older dual fuel motors. But the guys at Redpower will very quickly answer your questions. And I would definitely think you would better off just using the motor you have...although I did hear about a guy who put a V8 in a TD9, but he had to use the transmission (automatic) in order to reduce the input speed sufficiently for use in the crawler. He said it worked ok, but I didn't really hear all the details. Needless to say at least some machining and fabrication will be required.

The WD9 tractor engine is the same although it may not drop in, the parts are the same inside. 335 cu in. These were the first eng. for the 9 series.
