I am in the market for a skid steer, 40 hp, for bucket landscaping work, general farm use, $10,000 price range. I have looked at Case 1845 and Bobcat 753. Does anyone know who sells the most in those ranges? Which brand is most popular, which has the best reputation for durability and frequency of repair? What is the weakest link on these? What to look for when looking at a used one? I like to do my own maintenance and repairs if possible.

we've got a nh 465, bobcat 763, and case 1845. Wouldn't recomend the NH, ours fell apart. The bobcat's not bad, we'd have a second one if we didn't get a deal on the case, the bobcat dealer told us when he stopped out that if we didn't want a bobcat he'd recomend the case over anything else. 1845 is quite a machine it will drive forward up our 45 degree bunk wall pushing a flatwagon. The booms are breaking out around the crossbeam but compared to the welding we continue to do with the new holland its nothing major. the bobcat has taken some bushings, fan bearing, and we had to clean the seat safety switch once it died mid-cycle loading dirt. I think NH has the most used ones out there for sale because everyone got tired and dumped the ones they had.

You have a lot of good choices in that price range. I've had a Gehl 4625 (46hp) for 5 years, 3100 hrs. Excellent machine- about $200 in repairs over the years- (two parts. solenoid and module)- bought used with 1100 hrs. I prefer hand controls- my feet are flat on the platform unless I'm using the remote. Nice on rough ground, but it's all in what you like and get used to. Rented a new Melroe with an auger that had more slop in the lift arms than my Gehl does now. Never liked foot pedals like on the Melroe. All are more easily serviced now than years ago, with the tilt cab feature. Looked at trading up recently to the 35 series, mine is worth about $8500 now. 35 series and newer have the universal mounting plate- big advantage for attachments. I imagine Melroe is the biggest seller- popular with contractors, never liked their belly bar on the older machines nor some wiriing lockouts, where you need to push buttons each time you get back in the machine before you can make it move. Gehl is ready to move when you pull the belly bar in place. Best bet is put some hours on each before deciding.

I never heard of Melroe! Are they really that big? I heard of Gehl but did not think they were that big a seller either. I wish I knew the order of largest sellers ranked for....New holland, Bobcat, Case, Gehl, Melroe, Others for the years ranging from 1995 to 2000 since I am interested in a used one. Anybody know this or where this info can be found?

Melroe is Bobcat. They invented skidloaders. Actually the first Melroe was invented by a turkey farmer and Keller Bros. blacksmith in Rothsay Mn. Farmer wanted a light machine to hoist into a two-story barn. First one had planetary steering with one crazy wheel behind. Melroe Co. of Gwinner, ND picked up and developed the idea. They mfd tine tooth harrows, windrow pickups, rock pickers, etc.

I shopped for a while, looked at all the different brands. Going in I acknowledged my biases: I liked the looks of the NH the best, had had very positive experiences with Gehl, was partial to JD yellow.

After an exhaustive search I found that every brand I looked at was making good machines. Some trends that I observed (IMHO only)for USED! machines:

Gehl: cheapest price of the majors, second fewest for sale
Case: most expensive for age and hours, fewest for sale used
Bobcat: largest number of engine fires, seemed to be lighter construction in the rams
JD: only saw very late model units, outside my price range
CAT: only saw very late model units, outside my price range
NH: largest number of units for sale

What I wound up with was a Case (1845C), but only because I found one on a day I wasnt looking. One of my former students was selling his farm (made the mistake of pricing it, even at a high price doubled) and the guy that bought it said be out in 2 weeks.

He asked me to come by and look at what he had, see if I wanted anything to use or to sell.

I believe the 1845 is a bigger machine than is the 753 probably an 1840 would be a closer match. But anyway, Bobcat sells the most, durability and frequency of repair is a toss-up, the weak link on the 1845 and 1840 is at the rear wheel hub's, over time they will bend the frame where the wheel hub bolts on causing the rear tires to lean in at the top and it will develop cracks in the metal due to stress and will constantly leak chaincase oil (well until it all leaks out then you will have another set of problems) I really cant put my finger on any design flaws or weak links on the 753 other than the extremely short wheelbase which will beat you to death but this was by design (but the Case is the same way), I dare say that a skidsteer is the most abused piece of equipment there is, it's really hard to judge the condition of one without running it for a few hours, you cant count hydraulic leaks, they all leak like a sieve, it's personal preference on hand controls (Case) or foot control (Bobcat). All of them are hard to work on, you have so much stuff crammed into a small space but for general maintenance I'd have to give a nod to the Bobcat. If I were buying I would try to get the owner to let me use/rent it for a day then you can see which one best suits your needs as well as how it preforms after it warms up. I just rebuilt the hydrostatic pumps and motors on a old New Holland the bill was over $3000 not counting my labor, far more than the machine was worth.
