Determining worth of a crawler?

I am looking into the possibility of someday soon
purchasing a small, used crawler-loader for light use. Right now I think I might want to get a JD 350 that's a little older and isn't too expensive, but has a good undercarriage and doesn't require too much mechanical work. I've been told that Deere parts are expensive, but I'm a little concerned that a twenty- or thirty-year-old model of a less popular make would be virtually impossible to find parts for.

Though I've owned and driven several wheel tractors, I have little experience with track equipment, and I'm just in the learning stage with regards to knowing how to size up a crawler. Does anybody have any suggestions as to where I can go, a web-page or a book, to get some idea how to determine fair market price for used crawler loaders? I am looking for something akin to what a dealer would use to get a base price on used stuff.

Thanks.

I believe that no matter what all Crawlers are worth their weight in GOLD, Around here they keep away the women, children and faint of heart. They attract BLUE AIR, BILL COLLECTERS, WASP and RUST ATTRACTED MEN WITH DEEP POCKETS....Oh Yea and HEARING LOSE.

I have a J.D. 1010 for sale (4cyl. gas). Its older than a 350, but if you are looking to do light work, it runs good. It was bought to clear my house lot. Asking $3500.00. Good Luck with your search.

I was looking for a JD 350 to use on my farm, and to do a job or two for others. It seemed to me all the JD 350's and 450's that were for sale, were over priced, or mostly wore out. Then i ran onto a Case 450. It had 200 hours on new pins, bushings, pad bolts, and sprockets. It all so had a few smaller things replaced on it too. It starts and runs like new, and doesn't burn any oil. Long story short, i bought it, and have done only maintance since. I've made a fair amount of $$ with it too, besides rebuilding a lot of the road on my place. I won't go as far as Marlowe below, but i will say, around here a lot nicer Case crawlers are to be had for less $$ than JD crawlers. I'm glad i bought the Case, it's a good tractor. BTW, i think you will be better off buying a little nicer (lower hour) crawler now, than haveing to buy parts later. Part prices are out of this world these days!! Robert

In my case i looked at what I really _wanted_ to do with it, added up the probable hours and figured out what someone else would charge me to do it...In my case about 50 hrs or bush clearing times local going rate of $70 per hour...It was going to cost me $3500 anyways, so there was my crawler budget...A newer crawler is going to be easier to run, and probably need less maintinence while an older one would allow me to get a size ot two larger than I thought I needed.. I bought a old D7 cat, model 3T, and have put over 300 hours on it in the last two years, and am very happy with it. I can get 'new' parts virtually overnight, and with cat a lot of wreckers will have used lower cost parts..This is important for a 'work' crawler.. My toy crawlers, 40 Cletrac 6 cyl gas and a IH TD9, were bought on a 'price per pound' basis as they were not bought to be work units...

Nothing really planned for it, undercarriage seems pretty good, has a Bucyrus-Erie?? blade on the front [think it's got angle too]. I was maybe going to use it for doing a bit of re-piling, ??, drivetrain seems very good with the exception of the right hand final, bearing on the small shaft on top is gone [drives the bull gear], and case is cracked out on very top...moves but in circles ..:)
why??

Gar, I have a 350B, I picked up a few months ago.
Not knowing anything about dozers I just bought it, payed around 8500.00. I used it hard for about a month, and noticed the steering getting lazy on one side. I called John Deere and they wanted around 2500.00 to fix the steering clutch and replace the brake band, I decided to give it a shot myself. After around 3 weekends I have it all back together and it turns good. Although it is a fine machine I often wish it where bigger, to move more earth. I like the 350, it's easy to work on. With an older machine upkeep is constant,
Something is always up.... Hope this helps a bit.

The value of an older crawler is largely determined by how good the U/C is. The better the U/C the more money that it is worth.

There are many fine older machines out there. JD is good, AC is good, IH is good. Some models are toughter to find parts for and some parts are not available for some machines. While engine parts are usually available, it is the high wear parts that become the most difficult to find such as rails, rollers, idlers, sprockets ect.

If you find a good JD take it and go from there. If not look at TD9 or the HD5/6 by AC.

Form the sounds of what you want to do, you are almost calling for a light project tractor. Need not be perfect. Look at www.ibdozing.com on the discussion formus there. Is is broked down by tractor make and so you can get a good idea what peole are saying.

Now no matter what you buy, unless it is almost new, you will spend more time working on it than running it. I know I have 4 that way plus at that same time helping a buddy on number 5 right now rebuild his hudraulic systems and have added a 15Ton Mobile crane to the mix.

That is also the fun part of this stuff, How to I fix it to keep it running. Like the surrealist play "Waiting for GODOT"

Good luck hope you find a good one
