Anybody know where the machine serial number is located on an Allis Chalmers HD4 crawler?

Check the flat horizontal surface in front of grill. I be lieve it is stamped there, been a long time since I worked on these crawlers.

Thanks, I looked there once already but was looking for a tag or plate. If it's stamped in, the several layers of paint and grease might be hiding it.

Yeah, I've got an HD5 and an HD6, but the HD4 is different. I called an AC industrial dealer, and he says the number is somewhere around the radiator compartment, but I can't find it. HD4 has the radiator in back of the engine under the dashboard, not in front like most machines.

I don't think I have ever seen one then.I'll have to pay more attention in the future.. That would be a nice feature,I have a habit of running limbs into the radiator.

It's new to me too, I'd never seen one before. I was a Deere mechanic most of my life - but somehow, I've got almost all Allis crawlers. The HD4 is a 9000 lb. crawler (not counting dozer blade and frame), has an Allis 200 cubic inch diesel engine, torque converter drive with a hydraulic reverser. Mine has a six-way blade on it and was made in the late 60s or early 70s. The AC literature states that the behind-engine mounted radiator was an innovation, and kept the radiator out of harm's way. Also came with an optional fan that blew all the heat onto the operator to stay warm in the winter. Allis changed the name from HD4 to 652 or 653 before they ceased production.
