941 Caterpillar, Fuel Problems????

I recently purchased a 941B Traxcavator serial #70H3337. The machine has been working fairly well until a couple of weeks ago. I am using the machine to clear a long driveway on my land. I am fairly new to operating crawlers, however; I have operated backhoes and bobcats before but I am not a very experienced mechanic.

After running the machine for about 45 minutes to an hour, the engine starts to sputter and eventually dies out. If I leave the machine for a day or so, It will start up again an run again for about the same amount of time. I don't work on it every day, so it's hard to say how consistent the problem is.

I changed the fuel filter and replace the fuel line. After removing the fuel line from the engine, it seemed to not be flowing very well. I did not have a compressor or anyting to try blowing out the clog, so I just replaced the line and the filter. I also cleaned the smaller wire filter that is in the bulb shape metal container underneath the feul system. I figured that this must be the problem, however; after working about an hour, the problem started again.

Does this sound like a fuel pump problem or something more serious?

Any reply's to this message would be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,
Frank

Look for a screen (filter) &check valve at the input of the transer pump. I'm not sure of 941's fuel system, just thinking of problems w/other cat equip.

Might be as simple as a clogged breather on the tank/fuel cap or low flow from the tank outlet.

Thank you for the information. That sounds logical. I have been hearing pressure when opening the fuel cap similar to opening a soft drink.

I will check it in the morning. I was really worried that it may need a new fuel pump.

This has to be the most useful website on the internet.

I vote for fuel filler cap clogged. Run it again and when it stops and all is quiet, loosen the cap and listen for air entering the tank.

This makes a lot of sense. I already replaced the fuel line, filter, and drained all of the fuel out of the tank.

I do remember hearing air entering the tank similar to a soft drink opening. This would explain why very little fuel was coming through the old fuel line when I removed it from the fuel pump assembly. I replaced the line thinking that it was just clogged up.

Thank you for the information. I will check the cap in the morning.

Later, Frank

Frank just get a new cap. The big clue here was the 45 min operating every time. I had this problem with my LAWNBOY too.

i vote for trash floating around/settling in the fuel tank..... there ought to be a water seperator/sediment filter screen before the primary fuel filter base....and check the fuel line.... its supposed to be a steel line... it might be pinched from a rock or limb somewhere....

Thanks for the information!

I already drained the fuel tank, replaced the fuel line, and changed all of the filters.

A couple of other reply's suggested that I check the breather in the fuel filler cap to see if it is clogged. This makes a lot of sense. When taking the fuel cap off, I have been hearing a pressure release similar to opening a soft drink. I am hoping that it is something simple like that. The loader is about 20 miles from where I am currently at or I would check it right now. I guess I'll just have to wait until morning.

Thanks for your help.

I would go with Bob/Ont on this, he knows what he's talking about. And I don't really know what it is (I'm a crawler newb), but I also agree with jim about the stuff settling in the tank. Shortly after buying my machine I attempted to drain any water that might be in the tank using the water drainoff stopcock. I opened the stopcock and nothing came out. I expected fuel and/or a little water to come rushing out. Eventually I took the entire threaded portion out and still no fuel or water came out. I thought maybe the drain port was clogged with rust particles or gunk so I used a thin screwdriver and inserted it into the port to clean it out, and voila! Out came a little crud and then the fuel (and a little water) in gushes.

Anyway, I guess it's normal for some sediment/rust to settle at the bottom of the tank in an old crawler that may have been setting for a while, especially with an unfilled tank (so that rust forms inside). Maybe like jim said, some of that crud has gotten into your prefilter? Although the plugged tank vent sounds very easy to check on, so I would do that first.

Good luck...
