I tweaked the linkages to make the pedals the same height....but without buying the $409 service manual, can someone send me a drawing of what's going on inside the rear end there? Is it a ring, or disc or plates or what's the wear facing and how the heck do you R&R without pulling the wheels and housing apart?!?!?!?

Sorry for the newbie-ish question, but new to backhoes and just wondering what's going on in there.

Jeff, if they have linkage going to them, they are disc brakes that are applied by a rotating cam/plate with balls on ramps. The parking brake lever puts them on too. Make sure all your linkage pins are free. Raise the wheels one at a time off the ground enough to rock them by hand. Tighten up the rod going into the axle untill they start to drag as someone turnd the wheel for you. Then back it off, I think it's 2 1/2 turns but not sure. You will need to experiment to get them where you need them by peddal travel. Do both the same and make sure they don't drag when you are done.

That's what I did, got it adjusted out pretty nice, park brakes too.

The left side has been a weak sister since I bought it (Guess prev owners used it exclusively without latching the two together.) So I guess you answered my implied question which was that the whole rear end must be dissassy'd to change out the discs. Sounds like I haven't the guts to attempt that!!! How long should the wear surfaces last, and should I just bite the bullet when I got the money and go to the dealer?? It's a 1990 model, and it doesn't seem like it's ever been broke apart.

Thanks again for your info.

It might be best to let them do it. But what you could do now is change the oil and check for any metal chunks so you don't get any unplesant surprises when you take it there. Use Multi Purpous Tractor Oil and you need a small pump to get it in the filler hole in the back of the axle.
