my service manul for my jd450 says to run straight sae 30 motor oil in summer. I wanted to know if you guys had any input on how important it is to run this or if I can run a multi viscosity oil in it. It only recommends multi viscosity oil for when its below 32 degrees. I run through the winter and don't want to have to switch oils when it starts dropping in temp. Let me know what you think. thanks

I think the recommendations in the book are just a little dated. I worked for a Deere dealer for a long time (a least back to when the straight 450s were new). We had a fleet of rentals consisting of 350s, 450s, and 440,540 and 740 skidders. For years we used HDX 10W in the winter (Quaker State) and Deere TorqGuard straight 30W in the summer. At some point in time, I think around the late 80s, Deere started recommending 15W-40. Not Rotella of course, but their own brand - which I heard was made by Shell and was probably Rotella with a Deere name on it. I use Rotella 15W-40 in everything, all the time. Never has a problem with it and I buy it in 6 gallon cases for $32 at BJ's Wholesale. I've never experienced a serious a problem with any engine oil (that I know of) except one, and that was Quaker State HDX. They had a bad batch back in the early 80s, and there were diesel engines blowing up all over the country - mostly big rigs. At the time, I was using it in all my stuff, including my 1964 SS Chevelle. I was driving to work one morning and the oil pressure in my 327 slowing descended from 80 psi down to about 5, and that was at highway speed. Found out it was the oil but thought maybe it had gotten diluted with gasoline or something. Had me a little stumped until the Quaker State story hit the news and the law suits started.

15-40 will work year round unless you are in extremely cold climates,in which case you can switch to a synthetic or 10w. I use rotella 15-40 in everything with an engine in it all year. This includes the lawn mowers, cars, trucks, and all my tractors, old and new.Saves having a bunch of oil cans sitting around.I buy it by the 55 gallon drum.Have never had an oil related failure in over 20 years of using it.

My manual for my JD450C says the same. Should we go by the book or is the book outdated? You would think today's 15-40 diesel oils would be superior to straight 30 weight. Does it have something to do with the turbo? 15-40 oil should flow better in the cold. Would be very interested to hear other opinions on this myself.
