TD-9 Oil and Oil Filter questions

Okay, I'm new to working on this crawler. Went to Napa to get a Oil Filter, but I don't know what the engine size is.

It's a 1965 (I think), TD-9 (straight six diesel), the engine serial is #TD92 M5387.
The chasis serial is # TD-92 5461 1855

The Napa manual shows three displacements, something like 282, 335 and 350(?) It listed two filters for the bigger engines (full flow and partial flow)???

My manual didn't list the displacement, I did the math (on bore and stroke) and came up with 282. ... But I ordered the manual on the presumption that it's a 1965, not to mention anything about different engine sizes. Aaack!

How can I tell what the engine size is?

Also, just wondering on which oil to use. I was planning on using Chevron DELO 400 15w-45, checked the manual and it says to use 30w (I'm in California).

Any advice on which oil to use?

Thanks a Ton,

-Marc

Marc,

I have a 1969 TD9B with Drott loader (called a 150 loader). It's basically the same tractor as a TD9B dozer, except its the loader version. My machine has a 282 diesel (straight six), and I'm almost certain that yours does too. The only differences between certain models were between the powershift model (like mine) that came in a naturally aspirated version (non turbo), and the manual shift machines came with a turbocharger. But I'm pretty sure all of the B models came with the 282 base engine.

When I bought my machine the seller gave me a Hastings oil filter for it that he bought at NAPA. The part number off of the filter says LF328. Although I haven't actually removed my existing filter yet to verify this filter fits, this should be the right one for your machine.

Also, I'm looking for the part numbers for the air, fuel, transmission and hydraulic system filters. If you resolve what those are, let me know.

Good luck...

It looks like you have a 1962 machine. The 92 series came with the D282 engine. I run 15w-40 in all my equipment, usually Rotella T. One of the weak points of that tractor was the steering clutches. They are dry type clutches and they have a tendency to rust up due to moisture and condensation. There are two drain plugs, one in each steering clutch lower cover. It is a good idea to take them out and leave them out. This allows any condensation or rain water to escape. You may want to remove the lower covers to clean out any accumulations of crap that may inhibit water drainage. And most of all, USE THE STEERING CLUTCHES. Even if you don't need to use the machine, start it up and run it around once a month. This will keep the rust off of the steering discs. Once they are frozen up they usually have to be removed and overhauled.

Some advice I've picked up on the CAT ACMOC BB:
Remove the drain plugs from the steering clutch compartments, drill a 3/16th hole in them, and stick a 1/8th inch split pin thru, and flare out the ends of the split pin. Reinstall drain plugs. That way you keep all the crud (mud water, gravel, dirt, dust, etc) from entering into the compartments, but any fluids can drain out.

Thanks for the tip, I'll definitely keep an eye on the steering clutches. It seemed they were on the verge of locking up a month ago ... I'll keep them in motion and drained/clean.

I'll also go with the D282 Filter and 15w-40 oil setup.

Now, I am curious about the Year and Model. How can I confirm the actual year of the crawler? Also, what are the differences between models (91 & 92 series?) and Years? (sorry for all the questions) ... basic stuff, but I can't find any information on it ... any feedback is greatly appreciated

Thanks again for the advice, it has helped me a great deal !!

-Marc.

Marc, If you go to the Redpower site link provided below, the guys there will be of great assistance for getting info on your old IH crawler. If you post a picture of your machine there, they will tell you what you're working with. Plus keep in mind that it's possible you may have a transplanted engine in your machine from another year/model. If you have a 1965, you have a B model, but the -92 serial number you speak of is for earlier pre'62,'63 models.
