I own a Case 580, and regularly run a Cat 416D.

The Hydraulics on the Cat are SLLLOOOWWW....
On the other hand, the motor and hydraulics
are quite substantial in the power department.

The ergonomics of the Cat are better,
except where they put the damned gear shift.
Case has better positioning for the shifter.

Also, the gear split on the Cat between
2nd and third is WAY too wide, and I either
wind up gunning the stops in 2nd, or foot braking/dragging to control the speed in 3rd.

Case's gear splits are much better.

Cats have the standard ISO backhoe controls,
so you can move to an excavator easier.

Case has their 3/4 finger (w/extendahoe)
controls you need to learn.

I've ran all three(cat,JD and Case)There's not much difference between any of them Allof the newer models are good other than the armrest breaking off (Cat and JD)you have to get into the habit of not pulling on the arm rest when entering the cab.I prefer the cat only because of resale value and it's a better looking machine. just my opinion hope this helps

Steve, thanks for the reply. I had a case that I sold and in looking for another, was curious about the cats not taking a hard look at them before.
