I recently purchased an old Case crawler forklift which is very similar to the early Case 310s, it barely steered either way. Come to find out they put 90 weight gear oil in the differential instead of the Mineral Oil rating GL1, when I put that in there it steered much easier and better but still not quite right so I think the brake bands are still saturated with the gear oil. Problem solving these mysteries are over the years determining which brake band material was used for what gear oil if they have been changed over the years. It was hard to believe that oil made that kind of difference. You might want to check that out.

You will never get a wide gauge to turn as sharpe as a narrower gauge 60vs48

Robert,

Controlled differential steering will give
you a 45% decrease in speed on one track and a 45% increase on the other track .

Yes, under certain conditions. Under other conditions, one track will completely stop and the other will take off like a rocket - and the crawler will almost turn on a dime. Same goes for the Cletrac HGs and OC3s when they're right.

My 310 turns real sharp. I'd say it's pretty close to within it's own radius. When I pull a break leaver, as far as I can tell, that track locks up.

Sounds like you need to adjust your brakes. There's an outside adjustment where the linkage connects to the brake lever. And, there's an adjustment inside the differential where the ends of the brake band are joined. Your brake lever (I'm calling those little levers on either side of the top rear of your differential housing brake levers) should have about a quarter inch of free travel before it causes the brake band to contact the drum. To get this quarter inch you must adjust the turnbuckles on the ends of the brake bands inside the differential. Hopefully I haven't confused you too much?

I'm guessing to a degree, but as I recall the 310 has a Clark planetary drive transaxle with no cluthes. At least the old 310s that Case made from Terratracs did. Pretty much the same as what Bombadiers and Cletrac HGs and OC3s use. Usally, with the brakes and differential working properly, light braking will make a wide turn - with power to both tracks but one moving faster then the other. Full braking will lock up one track and the other will go like H*ll, and it should virtually turn on a dime.
By the way, found out I can't write the word H*ll here or it won't post. For some reason, it's considered a profanity.
