At the final stages of installing the reversor into the frame of my jd 350.Looking for some (more) input on the correct way of installing the coupler to mate reversor to transmisson.I have already bolted reversor to transmisson,Was some what leary about the lining up of the coupler as i didnt have any help with installing reversor,so i could not see coupler as i was joining reversor to trans for front of reversor. My question is, if the coupler wasnt lined up would i have been able to bolt reversor to trans. It did slide together pretty easy.So not being sure if it mated properly,i was thinking if i put trans in gear and tried turning spider shaft it shouldnt turn if it was mated properly.Any input would surely be appreciated.

I don't think it's possible to get the reverser case drawn all the way up to the transmission case if the coupler isn't lined up. If it fell of, maybe. There is however supposed to be a snap-ring inside the coupler, in the middle. It's put there so half the coupler will stay on the reverser output shaft, and the other half will stay located on the transmission input shaft. I've seen a few jobs where someone forgot to put the snapring in a new coupler, and one of the shafts got ruined since the coupler walked away from it and hardly any splines were engaged. Snap ring is part #T1445. A fifty cent part that will prevent a couple of thousand dollars in damage. When I intalled reversers in 350s, I'd have the trans. in gear, and then I'd put the reverser in forward, and blow compressed air into the pressure port which locked the forward clutch pack, and then turned the reverser input shaft 'till I felt the splines engage.

Thanks JDE i will try that method.i had put the coupler on the reversor shaft before installing.I
was thinking if the coupler was hangin up on the trans shaft If by drawing the bolts tight maybe the output shaft on the reversor would push that snap ring thru to the other side.Iam gonna back the trans off a bit and make sure. Thanks

the reverser and trans will not go together without coupler lined up. I did this last year on my 350B. My coupler walked and ruined the trans shaft. I think the original owner never put snap ring in. I found no sign of it in case. I split the trans and reverser a little and looked in with a mirror, to be sure all was lined up.

Steve..

Thats why im thinkin if i pushed the snap ring thru, when i tighten up the bolts.Could that have maybe happened with yours, the snapring got pushed outta place and as the coupler walked on the shaft it just ground up the snap ring to nothing, which would explain why there was no sign of the ring at all.I will back off the reversor and check it if JDE'S method doesnt show any results...Thanks Wing

Also check the condition of the studs comming off the trans 5/8" I think, If there is any dought that they will not torque down now is a good time to heli coil trans holes. Mine were loose, and that is what caused the whole mess. A trans shaft from deere was close to 700!! I found one aftermarket from Heavyquip for less than 200.
