Now that reversor is install(backed reversor off trans and coupler was installed properly see previse post)I was gettin ready to install engine when the motor froze up on my 1962 Ford backhoe..... #&*# !!!!! ! When it rains it pours.Has anyone come up with a inexpesive way of making a portable a-frame engine hoist to install the engine or a way to get that engine installed short of renting a forklift .Its a jd 350 and i have the engine sitting on the ground in front of the 3in 1 loader which is still install on the dozer.I was repositioning the engine when the backhoe engine locked up,luckly the engine wasnt up over the loader bucket when it happened. Thanks

Wing

An engine hoist will work fine, If you run into trouble you can roll the dozer under hoist in neutral.

It also helps to have dozer up on a few peices of rail road tie front and rear . this allows hoist to roll side ways under dozer.

Gotcha...

Dozer was up on ties...Went to Harbor Freight bought hoist for $149.00.Had to cut tie with chain saw got it in. www.safewerks.com/pic7.JPG .
It was a job using a hoist on uneven dirt.I think if next time ill go with scaffolding in that situation. Thanks all for suggestions

I recently removed and re-installed a engine in a little dozer with a length of 3" pipe, cut in half and a piece of angle bolted to the top. It was ~10' tall, the angle iron was the width of the tractor. I chained it to the tractor at the bottom, then ran chain from the angle to the front and back of the tractor. I put caps on the bottom of each pipe and dug shallow holes for them to sit in so they wouldn't kick out. Cost about $60 for the pipe plus I bought some more chain. Work ok, used an engine leveler to align the engine with transmission spline. Didn't have much choice since the tractor was parked on a hill and would have been difficult to move. Engine weighed about 400#.
Good luck. Ray

one time I put an engine in using a length of chanel chained to the box of a dump truck sticking out the back by lowering the box it picked up the engine. put a come-along between truck and tractor, with truck in neutral pull it back in place, it was quite easy, had chain fall between engine and chanel, used vice grips to keep chain on chanel from slipping. good luck ps.we also have some large trees up here that work too. lizardtrack

I built a pipe tripod in front of my 350 & chained a piece of 3" pipe to the ROPS canopy that extended out to the tripod. Then put chain hoist on 3" pipe & hoisted it up. Just make sure tripod legs can't slip & it works great. I had the engine beside the dozer.

If you have a way to move the crawler you could make a tripod out of poles like the oldtimers did and pull it under after you got the engine up in the air. Or if there is room you might be able to rig a boom off the side or back of a dump truck. HTH
