Best thing i have found is, spray it down with degreaser let it sit a few hours. then hit it with a hot steam jenny. works good and will get the lose paint off too.

Working on old cranes I've seen some heavy, mean grease. The best thing we've found for the "normal" stuff is Grease Gone. Sorta like Purple Stuff but it seems to work better. For the really mean stuff get a few cans of oven cleaner and spray it on and let it set for a while to break everything loose. Rinse it off good and it'll be about as clean as your gonna get it short of using a steam jenny. You have to be careful with it though as you can imagine. Wear the right protective gear when your using it and if you leave it on too long, it will remove the paint along with the grease. Good luck.
