I have just acquired an Allis Chalmers 6G crawler loader, serial number HD6G-4896. It runs good but does not steer. I was wondering if anyone could tell me what year it is and how to fix the steering clutches. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

How do you mean not steering? The brakes don't work so it will not turn sharp? Or the clutches will not release so it will not turn at all? With the tractor moving forward pull both steering levers back full. The tractor should stop if not the one or both clutch assembles have seized. I have had pretty good luck breaking them loose by operating the tractor with the levers tied back and running the tractor back and forth, pushing dirt if you can, and the clutches may break loose in a few hours; heat and vibration. If the tractor stops when you pull both levers, the clutches are releasing and the brakes are out of adjustment or worn-out not unusal for a loader.

Your's is a 1956. It's got a 55 horse Buda 344 c.i.engine and weighs 19,600 lbs. with the 1.5 yard bucket.
I've got a 1955 HD6 dozer. Steering clutches come out the top, i.e. the finals don't have to come off.
