was wondering if I could get some advice

Iam going to get my 440 crawler soon, I was going to try and start it. It hasn't run in years.

Have not checked to see if the motor is free.
If it is, is there somthing I can do maybe fill the crank case with somthing? then try and break it free with somthing?
I don't know if its 6 or 12 volt?????
if I can get it running I hope to drive it on a trailer, then I can work on it at home.
any thing I need to do?
drain fuel, put in new, drain filter, bleed injectors.
its key start.
is there a parking break on this thing????? ?
any info would be very helpfull to me. Thanks much scott

Scott,
I am somewhat in your shoes. I have a 440ICD, and it was indeed seized when I purchased it. You may be able to remove the belly pan and get a pipe wrench on the shaft between the front of the engine and the hydraulic pump. That might enable you to break the engine free. You might also try to remove the injectors and spray in "PB Blaster" for loosening the crud which can be a source of friction. There is an inspection cover behind the governor you can remove to see the cylinder liners, and perhaps the piston skirts through the ports of the cylinder. You might see the "PB Blaster" coming through. If the engine is not seized, then inspect the air intake path for damage to the rubber hose portions, and for oil in the air cleaner area.

My engine was seized badly enough that I had to yank it and hammer out the pistons.
Good luck!
Matt

I had one that got water in the blower , it froze and expanded the turbines in the blower, this crammed them into the blower housing and made the engine seem locked up.

C/P. take the blower off Before you start beating on pistons! I learned the hard way!!!

Matt, thanks I need all the help I can get.
I will be driving down there tomorrow.
What motor does yours have??
How long was it sitting?
does it have a backhoe on it?
how did you move it while it was not running?
how did you get it up on a trailer?
is it running now?
what year is it?
sorry for all the questions.
thanks
scott

The engine was the Detroit 2-53. No backhoe.
I have moved it around my yard with a Dodge truck and chains. Turns, well, think of a 3 point turn, then add 50 more points!

The guy I bought it from said it was sitting a year. Maybe it was more!

It's a '59, and not running now. My intention is to put a gasoline engine in it. I bought a running gas engine, and still need to get a front mount bracket, a radiator, maybe some pulleys, throttle parts, governor, etc. My son has had a couple of surgical procedures (cochlear implant and removal) so time wasn't kind to me. This spring I intend on following through.

The nice thing about the 440 sized machines is that they are relatively easy to move and an automotive engine hoist can be very useful when needed. You don't need a crane.

The guy I bought this from delivered it. He got it on the trailer he said with a winch. He had a pickup truck with a big winch.

Best Luck!
Matt

As to being froze up , without seeng it it is difficult to answer. If there is a battery in it you can look at the cell caps 3 is 6 volt 6 caps is 12 volt , also look to see if it has a generator or alternator.
generator could be 24 volt DC not AC that means when you jump it you need to hook backwards. Look a battery leads ! If - side go's to ground and + to starter it is like your truck.....IF + go's to frame to ground and - to starter it is .
OPPOSITE of your truck. PARKING break: YES . at the right foot board there is a small lever that will catch on brake pedal , to latch push pedal down and flip latch up to catch pedal noches , this sets parkin brake. do oppisite to take brake off. NOTe; most ppl dont use parking brake on those old things. And if it is a diesel model go on a warm day and bring a good set of jumpers . and use starting eather sparingly, If motor is locked up you will probably need to push her on the trailer with a tractor or winch it.

If it is truly an ICD, then it will be 12 volt. There were 440ICD's with 2 batteries, but they were in parallel, not series, so still 12 volts. Lavoy
