Believe what Jdemaris said about the recall info. Never crank one from the ground. I am brand new to this and watched an experienced auction yard mechanic crank a sweet looking 450C from the ground and it shifted into reverse and slammed right into his big fancy Ford truck. Last operator had left throttle about wide open too. They move fast. Luckily nobody was hurt and I hope alot of people read my post when I put it here. Scared the cra*** out of us. I ended up recently buying a non-running Case 450B. I hope my operating and maintenance costs will be less than the JD (if I ever get it operating). So far, I have found that parts seem to be reasonable. Have not gotten to the big stuff yet. Good luck.

The JD450 B is not a bad machine the only drawback is the dry steering clutches. I would expect the machine has more than 5000 hours as they have not been made since 73 so it is at least 30 years old!!

JD 450 series is probably the best smaller crawler Deere ever made. Almost twice the machine when compared to a 350 (durability and power). Especially late 450B and on with Keystone rings in the pistons and turbocharger. I don't believe the hourmeter reading, but what counts is condition. B series is the last with dry steering clutches. Like any piece of iron that older, it can be very expensive to work on. But, that machine has good design all around. Deere had a class-action law-suit against them for all the crawlers they ever made using the HL-R transmission - that includes the 2010s up to the late 450Cs. Every single one of them was supposed to be tracked down by Deere and updated. I probably did a hundred of them, but I still see one once in a while that wasn't done. Problem was they'd jump out of neutral and sometimes, run someone over. Update included a new shift valve and modification to the mechanical 4 speed transmission shift gate to add a neutral position. As far as the hoe goes, main bad point is . . . if it has a barrel swing cylinder instead of two hydraulic cylinders. The barrel swing cylinders, basically, suck. They leak, are low on swing power, and parts are scarce. When I last worked for a Deere dealer ca. 1989, Deere was selling changeover kits to convert them to conventional separate swing cylinder design.
