I have watched a 1989 JD555E work for two days. Nothing seems to be lacking with the performance. The owner says it is a good machine. Paint is not fresh and there seems to be no breaks or welds. The sprockets are worn to points and the owner says the pins can be turned in 1500 hours. He has owned it for 6 years. That is about all I know except he wants $18,500 for it. I need it for farm cleanup work. Is that a fair buying price?

Hi Mark,I took a look at the 555E parts book,it looks like that it has the 450b+c type trans not, this is better than the earlyer 550 and555 machines,if possible check for cracks where the side frames bolt to the steering clutch housings, this is where they start to fail, they will crack from the top towards the bottom, once they have failed the trans housing will fail in the bevel-gear housing area, yuo can see the cracks by the reamoval of the small cover on the rear of the trans, make sure that there is no movement between the steering housing and the trans, ask if there was any heavy tools on back(backhoe)mak sure that the bolts between the side frame and the bellhousing are tight, that is just a few things to look for,----- -----Joe.
