Heyas,

Just got my grease gun attachment for these
button lock fittings but it appears
to not work so well, all the grease just shoots out the sides. Also, it doesn't
even fit on the one for the front idler...

Does anyone have the part number for the
grease gun fitting from napa? On
the box I got, it says coupler 715-1153, then napa and balkamp. It was like $33.

Someone said it was supposed to have
a lever to lock it in place, mine
doesn't appear to have a lever. There
is some sort of spring inside of it. There are a couple of bolt heads on it, maybe
those lock it down. Seems like a pain to
have to carry a wrench though. I will
try those tomorrow.

The lock down lever on the grease fitting makes it less leak prone and hold on to the botton better.

The idea of using a pipe plug works. Later TD9's and 6's used that and on the lubricator you have a long pin and you would pump till the oil flows out and way you go. The 140 is a good way to go or you can go to GL0 grease which can be used in a gun. Beware that if your rollers are empty you will use a lot of tubes of the stuff. Like about 1 per roller and since they were not the life time seal, you will leak it out pretty fast. IH used to recommend that you lube once a day if you ran it much

The older greases did use wax on some of them--aka parifin based greases-- but the bigger problem is that over time the VOC--volitile organic chemicals have dissapated and now you have goo. Goo is a to nice a word.

The button type grease fitting can be replced with 1/8 pt fittings you, might have to use a3/8 to 1/8pt or a1/4 to 1/8pt bushing. The common base for most grease is wax ,this why over the years it hardens up .I,have had to take pick type tool and remove some of it after removing the grease fitting. The track roller how ever has gear oil either 90w or 140w . They came with a red oil designed for rollers. The button fitting can be removed and replaced with a pipe plug.Replacing the oil can be done by getting cheap gear pump adapting a peice 1/4 tubing that go all the back inside the roller . Then pump the roller full until it starts run out then replace the button zert fitting or pipe plug. If you need more information contact via on line or call me 352-542-8760 Old Town Fl.

Maybe the check balls are stuck shut in the button head fittings. Try to phsically open them with a small screwdriver before using the lubricator. They are spring loaded from the inside. There should be a small rubber seal in the face of the lubicator fitting.

By the way, I think the rollers and idlers should have track roller lube, not grease. Maybe the grease is to viscous to enter the fitting. If they have not been lubed in a long time, fill your gun with gear oil and pump it in. Probably leak out fast, but will help freshen the old lube in side the rollers.

Good luck,

there appears to be no rubber seal on the
attachment I got. Plus, there is no lever
to lock it in place. I am thinking maybe
I didnt get the right one. It took the
guy at napa forever to figure out what I was talking about. He finally found
it in a catalog and ordered it for me.
I tried central tractor before that and they couldn't come up with anything for me.

As for using oil, can you put oil in a
regular grease gun? I was looking at those
big bucket oil lubricator deals but they are
like $100+. I figured the grease should
be fine since all the newer td6's have
the standard grease fittings?

Couple of things; try removing a fitting and see if grease will pump through it also buy a new fitting and try it. The seal surface of the fitting can go bad and they will not seal. You can put lube oil in your grease gun but make sure your plunger seal is setup for it. You might check on a lube gun. They look just like your standard grease gun except the pump diameter is about 1/2" instead 1/4".

You do not need the lever. There was a style of buttonhead adapter that had a lever, but the one without the lever will work just as well. The problem is the fitting is plugged, take them out and get oil to flow. When you have one out, you can see how your chuck fits, it should have a seal. You have to hold it exactly in plane with the fitting or it will leak. The 140 idea is your best bet.
