I have a 1964 1010c with a 50 series hoe with the barrel style lower cylinder. It creeps to either side which is an obvious pain when you are moving the machine. Does anyone have an idea if the problem is inside the barrel? Are parts still available or should I just up and live with it until is gives up working all together? This is a hobby machine and my wife isn't to happy when I drop a lot of coin on it. Sound familiar?? One last question, are they very strong ? is there anything I shouldn't do with it ? Thanks to all who respond.

I have a JD 450C with 9300 Hoe, on it there are cross over relief valves built into the swing control valve. They are there to relieve excess pressure if you swing fast and stop suddenly. If these get scored or dirt in them the Hoe will drift like you say and the will lose power.

The barrel swing cylinders basically, suck. They're low on swing power and prone to leaks. Back in the late 70s and early 80s, John Deere was offering kits to eliminate the barrel cylinder and install two separate conventional cylinders. At this point in time, I don't know if Deere even sells the seals for the vane in the barrel or not. The end plates tend to get scored, and we used to have them remachined. When the barrel is scored, there's not much you can do, except to keep on replacing the vane packings if available. I do like the 1010 crawlers (I've got a couple myself).
