I am looking for service info for a John Deere hydraulic winch. The winch is attached to a mid seventies JD450CA Crawler/Loader but I suspect it is a more recent addition. The S/N is E3305 0153822T. I need to know the procedure for adjusting the brake and what the correct fluid level is. TIA for any help you can send my way.

It takes hydraulic oil with the extreme pressure additives, i.e. combination transmission & hydraulic oil. John Deere's version is Hygard. The only adjustment on the brake band is for making it free-spool properly. There is no adjustment to make it grab tighter. Brake band is normally fully engaged by spring pressure via two coil springs. A little hydraulic cylinder overides the springs to provide free-spool. Usually, the first symptom of hydraulic system problems is when the winch won't free spool with the engine idling. It needs 1000 p.s.i. to do so consistently. If your brake is slipping, it probably has oil on it. The Deere winchs are prone to oil leaking problems, and there were many parts updates for them.

I will have to check my manual for the adjustment but the oil level part is easy. If you are facing the winch from the rear there is a large recessed plug on right top that looks like it belongs on a 55 gal drum. That is the fill hole. If you look down along the right side next to the mounting bolts, you will see another plug about half way down. This is the fill level. Pull the plug and fill from the top until oil comes out. Main drain plug is on the center bottom of the winch. Both main drain drain and level plugs are the same size, I believe they take a 1 1/8" wrench. Winch take regular JD Universal Hydro Oil. You will have to pull the side cover to gain access to the band adjustment.

Thank-you gentlemen for the replies. I pulled the left quill and found the double coil spring brake tensioner. I adjusted the tensioner to a total length of 4 11/16 inches as called for in the specs for similare JD winches. The length was 4 13/16 inches. Hopefully this will help with the slipping. I found the fill, level and drain plugs and have changed the oil. The old oil was a greenish black so I doubt it had been changed for a long time.
