Where is the reverser located? manuals havn't arived yet.

Do I have to pull the engine to take the blower off?

Is the oil pump, up front on the engine?? oil pick up was bolted there.

How can I see if the clutch it loose if the motor is in frame?
Can I put somthing into the starter hole and see if its loose????? starter is out. should be a little movement with clutch pedal depressed right?

I have been useing a pipe wrench on the pto sleave to hand crank the motor, rocking it back and forth. there is a tiny bit of movement. .010 or so.
But its not slop, its tight.

thanks
scott

You might as well pull the engine out and go through it.A Detroit needs all the compression it can get to run and a hone job in rusty sleeves will get it running, but not right. The engine has to come out to check out or bypass the reverser.Put a set of 21.5-1 pistons/liner kits in it,replace the bearings, have the blower resealed,a set of reman injectors, and a valve job. You'll be glad you did it.It will start without ether down to 20 degrees,it won't be slobbering unburned fuel and oil all over you,it won't leak 2 quarts of oil a day and it won't blow up when one of the old injectors sticks and it hits about 6000 rpm before a connecting rod and a piece of the block lands about 2 sections over. The Detroits are cheap to rebuild and you will find its money well spent since its torn down 3/4 of the way now.

who has pistons/liner kits I looked on this web site and Iam not sure what number I need to look up. 440 is a 4 cyclinder.
must be a casting number they are refering to.???

can the local auto rebuilder press in the liners?
or do I take it down to John deere and have them do this??

Its a 2-53 Detroit Diesel, try some of the parts houses near you,or truck dealers,or your machine shop. I quess your liners are rusted in,they usually almost fall out. This is an issue with the detroits,if the liners are too loose, supercharger pressure bypasses the outside of the liner and ends up in the crankcase causing oil leaks and oil contamination. I good machine shop should be able to press out the old liners and measure up the bores to see if oversize liners are needed, as well as do the head and reseal the blower.
