I am looking for a winch for a JD 350C Dozer. Anybody have any leads? I don't know much about these particular winches for these crawlers. Are there different sizes or brands to look for or to stay away from? Whats involved to put it on? Are there PTO and hyd ones available for these? I do believe there is a PTO access point behind that little plate in the rear. Thanks in advance. I am in Ca. -Mark

I've never seen a winch on a 350C other than the Deere winch. Older 350s and 1010s sometimes had Carcos. The Deere winch is PTO powered - 350C has an engine-speed PTO drive behind the plate. Winch has it's own hydraulic pump that activates dry clutches with a hydraulic piston. Winch brake uses a spring activated brake band, and hydraulic power pushes against the springs to give it free-spool position. I see them come up for sale now and then - certainly more often than winches for Allis Chalmers. I mention that because I've been looking for a winch for either my HD4 or my HD6, but all I've been seeing is used winches for Deeres. I was tempted to buy one for my Deere 1010, but it's got a rear ripper on it, and kinda' don't want to take it off. Keep in mind that winch parts are pretty damn expensive - so if you buy a used one, try to check it out. If you buy a Deere, you ought to either see it work first, or . . . pull the cover off the clutch side and make sure it's dry inside. If it's wet with oil, it's got problems. If you get to check out a winch that's on a crawler, make sure it will free-spool when warmed up and the engine idling. Usually, when the winch has hydraulic problems, the first thing to go is the free-spool position since it takes 1000 psi to make it work. If you come across an old manual Carco - it will be totally different and does not have an internal hydraulic system. Uses a big external master cylinder instead.

I have a Model E Carco winch, dealer rebuilt, that is supposed to fit an Allis HD4 or HD5. I bought it for my HD3, but then found a JD450 with a winch that is missing the hydraulic controls. Can't find parts for it or a complete winch in this area. Maybe we can work out a trade? Let me know.

For another winch that fits, i've a "Garwood Model CA514-305166" 10,000 pound winch mounted on my JD350, powered off the PTO shaft (540rpm). Pulls over 20" diameter shallow-rooted trees without any trouble.
