Hello

Does anyone have information, or a web address, that shows shopmade/homemade boring bars that are used to recondition worn pivot holes? I have a worn swing pivot that has worn through the bushing and into the original bore. Also any web sites that deal with making bushings and pins would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance

MetalZ

I have a good friend of mine that is a fellow tinkerer and he built a line boring tool grom a gearbox and a 1 7/16ths shaft and a few bearings. He built it to bore out an idler on a big Case dozer. he has an electric motor about 1/2 horse power to drive it and a lead screw made of 5/16 allthread. I plan on building one in the futere to do the swing pivots on my older Ford hoe. I did one a few years ago in College machine shop by removing it from the the hoe and taking off the boom. We had a large Clearfield boring mill there. I cclamped it to the table nad indicated it in best i could then uesd a centering cone to make sure. I bored it outand inserted the new bushing in the top. then I turned out a pin mount in the machine table. I indicated the pin into the center of the head then flipped the newly bushed part over onto it. It held it there longenough to bore a concentric hole with the other side.

Saw an ad in Farm Show paper on non stick rods you stick in bushing holes and weld around then drive out when finished non stick rods all different sizes available contact FARM SHOW good idea to fix worn holes, also expander makes a custom pin if ears on both sides of pivoting part, works on a tapered bushing, any size pin can be ordered,

Since no one else has responded, I'll at least share my approach with you. I've dealt with these alignment issues on my dozer bucket by machining an insert, cutting out the area around the warn hole big enough to take the whole insert, holding it in exactly the right place by means of a round bar that also goes through other holes it has to be aligned with (using a slightly undersized bar with a temporary bushing at the insert, to make it easier to get the bar out after welding), welding it in place, spreading the initial tacks around so as equalize stresses, and then welding it in solidly. Then remove the bar and put the hardened bushing, if used, into the insert.

Hi there

If you're reading this and would like more information, go to: March 31st, 2004 under "tool tech" or something similar on this site. Look for the heading "portable boring bar".

Best of luck
