Mike, you had posted to me that the blower on one of your rigs was hung up.
I have that 440icd that was stuck.
ended up being the pistons and the blower.
its free now But the blower at least one of the vains is pitted as is the housing case on that side, botom vain.
I was wondering what you did to fix it and about the parts you got.??
can you buy over size vains?? maybe re-machine the cae to the right clearance?
what part of the vains are critical?
these are a figure 8 shape and straight.
anybody???
thanks
scott

Just cut a 3-53 or 4-53 blower shorter if you can get one cheap enough and do a little machine work.

First thing" with mine the turbine vain was split because water got in and froze, it also cracked the blower housing.this wedged the parts together. I found an entire blower on ebay for $175, it wasnt exactly like the original but bolted up ok. It was off of a power unit and had a shutoff vein, i took it out and pluged the holes with pipe plugs. The insignea was round(denotes a newer model) whereas the origina JD blower was square. I found this stuff out just by taking chances.
I do know where you can get a brand new old stock, still packed in grease for $1,100 but that was more than i payed for the entire machine. I also know where you can get a useable used one for about 600, i'm not a machineist so i cant tell you about what "metalZ" said , sounded like it would work though. Make sure none of the parts are cracked though. seems like if there was water in there it would have likely froze. if you need one turbine vain let me know i have one from the original blower, it looks ok.

Mike
Taking the emergency shutdown plate out was a bad idea. While I realize not all Detroits came with them if you replace a blower inlet and gain one its a big plus.

Ever seen a DD run off? Not a pretty site. If you lose a blower seal and get hot motor oil into the airbox it will wind up till it literally explodes.

Its the lower vain that I need, top one is very nice.
Yes I paid 1,000 for the hole rig. we will see if it works out. It will be going back together next week.
Everything is working now at least all the levers move nice and the engin turns over.
my e-mail is Ttalkers@aol.com
how much do you want for it?
thanks
scott

Hello Mike

With regards to the blower rotor, it it possible to fit the sealing lips with Teflon strips. This allows a tighter rotor to case clearance, and will not wear the case if it contacts it. The case is salvagable if LIGHT sanding removes the pits and/or scratches. Hard anodizing will add approximatly .001" - .0015" to what ever surface you apply it to. If the case and/or rotor are severely gouged, you have to determine how much scavenging losses can be tolerated (that is, power loss). A good used blower or a rebuilt one are options to explore, I have seen them at $150 used to $650 rebuilt. Rebuilding one yourself is easy if you're mechanically inclined, bend a bunch of long feeler gauges into funny shapes and have patience. Clearancing the rotors and adjusting the gears for "up the middle" clearance of the rotors is time consuming but entirely possible if you approach the task in a logical manner.

Best of luck

MetalZ

sounds interesting.
how do they put the Teflon strips on???
Is there a web page or somthing that I can take a look at???
The pitted area is not on the wiper its on the radi area just above it, what about filling with somthing, like silver Solder or even a light weld, then work it down.
thanks
scott

Hi Scott

Putting Teflon on these rotors involves milling a groove into the rotor at the sealing lip for the teflon. If you try to fill the pits with weld, heat may cause distortion in the finished item. This is a real pain in the a$$, if I saw it, I could tell you go or no go, but the written word is failing to get the job done. I can not suggest a specific web address, but hot rod shops that work on blowers would be a start. Hope that helps a little. Keep your eyes open for a good used one or the whole damn engine at auction sales.

Regards
MetalZ
