First off, I would like to say thank's to all the guys who give their time to help others on these forums, you are much appreciated. A friend has a D7 that the engine stalled and wouldn't restart, he removed the supply line from the transfer pump and no fuel, cleared the line with air pressure and said their was lots of rust and crud that came out of the line. hooked it back up and the engine still wouldn't start, then he changed the transfer pump,{wasn't a new pump, but it looks new}and still no luck getting it started. and this is when I came into the picture. and my first question was did he bleed the system and he said that he had. went to see if I could help, first thing I did was remove the supply line to see if their was enough fuel and their seemed to be. I did notice that their was no primary fuel filter on this machine. did caterpiller not have primary filters on all their machines or did someone remove it?? I checked from the transfer pump to the shutoff valve on the fuel tank and no filter. I opened the valve on the top cover of the filter housing to bleed air off, and then he hit the starter and she busted off. fuel pressure was in the green for about a minute then dropped into the red and the engine stalled, I did a repeat of everything that I had already done and she fired off again, run for ten minutes before we lost fuel pressure. next time it run 30 minutes and he pushed some trees before it stalled. and the last time we fired it off it didn't stall out but the fuel pressure will drop to white on the gauge and then back up to green, we removed the filler cap on the fuel tank and it didn't help, fuel pressure was still up and down. and I also removed the adapter from the transfer pump two or three times to check for trash under the valve and it was always clean. if anyone has an idea as to what I need to do next to get the fuel pressure to stay in the green I would appreciate it, and should we install a primary fuel filter? sorry for the long dumb post guys but some of us can't do any better..Thanks again.

Trash in the fuel tank plugging the shut off valve (tank side)? Blow air back thru the line and it clears the problem for a while. Trash then settles back into the valve and plugs it again. Acts just like a filter or pump problem.

IF THIS D7 IS A PRECHAMBER MOTOR I HAVE SEEN A BAD INJECTOR CAUSE THE SAME PROBLEM BY THE INJECTOR NOT CLOSING IT WILL PUMP AIR BACK THOURGH THE LINE AND CREATE AIR LOCK IN THE FUEL SYSTEM.YOU CAN CHECK FOR THIS BY LOOSENING THE INJECTOR LINES ONE AT A TIME WHEN YOU DO HAVE IT RUNNING.I HAVE HAD THEM GO BAD AND THERE WAS NO PEFORMANCE TROUBLES AT ALL,NO SKIP, NOTHING TO MAKE YOU THINK YOU HAD A BAD ONE EXCEPT THE AIR LOCK.BUT IT SOUNDS LIKE YOU FILTER ISSUES TO WORK OUT FIRST.

Did either of you replace the fuel filter? With all the crud that came out of the lines its a good possibility the fuel filter is clogged.

Jim, there is a pressure relief valve in the fuel transfer pump. It dumps fuel to the suction side of the pump at about 30 Psi. If the filter is clogged as it may well be with what came out of the fuel line, it will cause a great pressure drop across it. The pump will dump fuel at 30 psi and the fuel getting through the filter will not be enough to give you much pressure at all on the gauge. Change the filter and see what happens.

I was told that the filter was changed, but before I make another eighty mile round trip I'll have him pick up another filter just in case.
Mark, Bob, thanks

Jim, tell him to change it again, with all you took out of ther fuel line it could have clogged the new one fast. Most old cats have a sediment bowl on the supply line about the size of a coffey mug and 1 and 1/2 times as high or a little one about 1 1/2" across by 3" tall held on with a bail near the transfer pump. Check for one of them too.

Bob, he has a parts reference book for this machine and it has the primary filter on the parts list for his serial#. he has a service manual that is for a later machine, and it has the primary filter mounted about 8-10 inches from the transfer pump. we removed the floor to inspect the supply line, and it is a one piece line from the shutoff valve to the transfer pump, the line looks factory, someone could have made it up and removed the filter. I sure wouldn't want all that dirt and trash going into MY transfer pump. Bob, I'll have him pickup another filter and their is another old D-7 that they robbed the transfer pump from, it could have a primary filter still attached and if so we'll remove it. Ill make the trip tomorrow to try to get it going and post the outcome sometime over the weekend. and Bob,until your better paid, "thanks"
Jim

If it is and older D7 the filter is after the transfor pump sounds like it is plugged up.
