TD 340 oil pressure up and down ???

I have an oil pressure problem. When I first start it the oil pressure goes to normal as it runs a few seconds it will drop off. So it goes from green to white and will sometimes drop into the red. The oil and filter have been changed but didn't help. Also as it runs the pressure will go from the middle white area and then back to the high side of red. Any Ideas??? Thanks!

John, It may well be that after 40 years or so of running, your engine is tired and worn out. When you first start it up, the oil is cold. Once it runs a few hundred revolutions, things start to warm up and expand. But so much wear on the moving parts(bearings, oil pump gears, etc.) has taken away those nice tight tolerances that kept your oil pressure up. I've got a 1960 TD 340, serial number 4001. It sat for eight years before I started in on it. I look at it like this, the engine's moving parts are well worn and not creating as much friction and heat as when new. Therefore, the old beast can amble along with less than "Like new" oil pressure. If it starts at 35 and goes down to 25 or 20 after it warms up, I'm not worrying about it. If it starts getting down to 15 or so, I'll get ready to tear it down or retire it. Also a CALIBRATED direct reading gauge might surprise you. That old gauge in the crawler might not be showing a true reading. Good luck, it's a great example of American made heavy iron isn't it? Jim

if releif valve or screen aren't clogged, a higher viscocity oil ( SAE 40 -50 vs. SAE 30 ) might help increase pressure, make for tougher cold starts, but still not fix the underlying problem.

You generally only need about 5 psi to keep plain bearings apart. It is lack of flow (to the right place)or too much clearance that runs the bearings. If you think about it, there is so much oil going by the too-wide space that it will be over-lubricated!
There may be a relief valve problem causing the fluctuating pressure.

Hi Jim Thanks for your reply. Yes it's a great machine built enough to do some work and light enough to pull with a pickup. And has seen a lot of work. I like it so much that I bought two more for parts.
I just thought it was strange to see the gauge go up and down like that. More of a surge than a gradual rise and fall. Could it be that the sump screen is clogged and will only get oil as it seeps by? Provided it has a screen. I will give it a new numbers gauge just to see what that low side pressure is.
