I've just finished the inframe on my JD350, and I've decided to run biodiesel because it is supposed to have better have better lubrication for the cylinders as well as the injectors. I understand that it can be a bit of a pain to fire off in cold weather, but from what I've read it offers better engine life in the longrun. Has anyone tried biodiesel? I intend to run the B20 - 20% mix.

I don't think there are any lubrication problems with farm diesel/heating oil. Just with the low-sulfur road diesel at the pump. Why would you want to used road-taxed fuel in a crawler anyway?

No road tax on biodiesel. I purchase it from my local ag supplier. I've tried a tank and the exhaust smells like french fries. I work for a Freightliner dealership and I get to see first hand the problems with the new emission engines. Not to dwell on the added 5,000 dollar cost of the low emission engine - the failure rate of Detroit's EGR system so far is 1 in 5. Caterpillar uses twin turbo's and some fleets have had to do inframes on their entire fleet before 100,000 miles. Poor Cummin's keeps sliding into oblivion. One fleet is using biodiesel and has not had any problems with their engines. The added cost is offset by reduced downtime. The State has even started the switch to a 20% blend to reduce engine maintenance. I've included the URL. I've included one of my e-mail addy's if you want to contact me directly.

Yeah, I understand the benefits of biodiesel if you can get it. I was referring to what you mentioned about low lubricosity in diesel for your 350. Since it's an off-road machine, I assume you'd be using fuel oil in it and not pump fuel, so there shouldn't be a problem anyway. As I understand it, it's only the low-sulphur highway-taxed pump fuel that's causing problems, especially in distributor-type injection pumps. The modern diesels that must meet highway emmission standards are getting to the point that you can't run "farm fuel" or heating oil. Some of them have exhaust particulate filters that getted plugged from sulfur. I read recently that some guy in England got put in jail for using biodiesel in his Volkswagen. Seems, that in England, you are required to pay highway tax on ANY fuel that powers a motorvehicle on a public highway. So, it's illegal, there, to use biodiesel that's not taxed. Wonder when it's gonna' happen here.
