identifying a caterpillar R2 possibly

My dad has an old Cat that he bought from his great uncle in the 60's after a long stint in the woods skidding logs. An "expert" cliamed it was an R2. I was wondering how I could verify this thorugh casting numbers and things like that.

Find the serial number and get back to us with it. It should be located on a plate on the left side of the engine and left rear of transmission case as looking at the Cat from the rear.
