A local New Holland dealer has a used 873 skidder
for sale. Is there anything I need to look for &
what would be a fair price. They call it a New Holland 873 but the only info I can find in for a 873 Bobcat? All Im sure of is it has a (201 cu. in. naturally aspirated Ford engine) whatever thst means.

Naturally aspirated means the air is sucked into the engine by the intake stroke of the piston, with no turbo to assist. A turbo is an exhaust driven device that pushes extra air into the engine on the intake stroke, so more fuel can be added to the mix to produce more power.

It might be a 783 NH,781's used a Deutz,785's used a Ford or Perkins diesel and were 2 speed. They are a decent machine with level lift, about 1800# lift capacity,Its a fairly heavy machine, can handle large round bales,a 65" bucket,or forks. It probably has the old style quick tach on it,which is not compatible to the newer attachments, but can be updated. Look for cracks on the boom, leaky cylinders, and run it long enough to get the hydrostats hot and make sure they don't slip and pull evenly. They sell around here for $6-9000 depending on hours, condition and attachments.

783's are full hydrostatic. The pumps are under the seat, the oil reservoirs are the chain cases. If you decide on it,have the dealer change the hyd.oil and filters, and adjust the chains as part of the deal.

Not sure if NH made an 873 or not, but the 873 Bobcat had a 64 hp Deutz oil-cooled turbo-charged diesel engine. The 873 Bobcat is a big machine, weighs about 7800 lbs, and also has the "vertical path" boom system. Depending on the year/hours/condition/usage it would be worth anywhere from $8k to $20k. If it really has a 201 ci Ford engine then it's not a Bobcat or it's been repowered.
