New to Crawlers -JD 450

I have just purchased a '69 or so JD 450 Crawler Loader. It seems in real good shape and the reverser works fine. It will not shift ranges though without shutting the unit off. It will just grind. Is this a clutch pilot bearing issue? Is this serviceable or lubable? Any other common issues to check? Thanks for your help.

Welcome to the crawler world. I have an 82 450C loader, backhoe & rippers. Like everything they have their place. I would suggest getting the proper manuals and study them. Learn where all the zerk fittings are at, make sure they all take grease, how and where to check the fluids. If I didn't buy it from someone I knew, I would service the entire tractor, all fluids & filters. I also think proper track adjustment is important. Too tight you will cause excess wear, while to loose you could pop a track. (just ask Mr. Bill) My 450 tends to sit for long periods of time. A few years ago the fuel pump started leaking/dripping while running, turned out to be a seal. I believe it may have been caused do to an O-ring drying out. So, I try to run it a little more. I have never had a problem with my 350C's which get run a little more, so thats why I say that. Good luck. -Mark

The four speed range transmission has no synchronizers and is not intended to be shifted unless you are at a dead stop and the clutch pedal is all the way in and the engine is idled down. If it still grinds to much, then your dry-clutch is dragging or the linkage is out of adjustment. When adjusted properly, pushing the clutch pedal halfway disconnects the HL-R hydraulic transmission, and pushing it down all the way disengages the dry engine clutch so the gear-range transmission can be shifted.
