This past winter my JD 440IC gas stopped with a bang. Just got the pan off and find the crankshaft broke just forward of the # 2 rod throw. Is this a common failure? Are 420 and 440 parts interchangable? Dan

I know someone that has parts for those machines, new and used. I know he has engine rebuilds for that motor. I saw him sell one. Email me and I can let you know how to get hold of him.

Engine parts are. If you need parts, let me know, I just pulled an engine out of a 420.

Now that you mention it, I have never had a crank magnafluxed, but I think I am going to start. I have never had one go bad, although I have heard of it.

Crank may have been fine but the mains out of alignment, few people ever check. If the crank had been turned there are still crank grinders out there who miss getting a decent radius ground on the journal edge. Becomes a stress point like a scratch on the piece of glass and "snap". Isn't there somebody like Stiener selling brand new cranks, there are certainly brand new heads?

Had a bad crank in my 40 when I bought it. The fellow before me was running it on only 1 cylinder. Bearings were a mess, thrusts gone. Took the crank out to have turned only to find out it was cracked. Pitched and found another.

The crank on these engines only has 2 bearings and I would imagine that if it isn't pulling on both cylinders the stress will become very high and cause a woble that will eat the bearings.

Have a 100 hours on it now and it still runs like a dream. But I spent a lot on parts and machining to bring everthing back into spec.

TonyK.
