Can a '57 420c have either 2 bolt or 4 bolt pads?

Also, how many pads should a 5 roller 420c have (so I can know whether it's been shortened)?

Thanks for any help.

420's would have either 31,32,or 35 pads. They should be 2 bolt. If you have one with 4 bolt, they are early 1010 chains. They use the same diameter pin and bushing so they will interchange. They also will appear in the parts book. If you look at the revision date on the parts book it will show 1963, after the 1010's were out.

The parts book shows 35 pads per chain. Also I believe the 4 bolt pads were used on the 440C, I don't see them listed in the 420/430 parts book.

my 440IC book list 440 w/ four bolt pads but with 36 pads as is on my machine, my understanding is that 420/430 have only two bolt pads and 35 pads in a full chain. but I am new at this.
