Hi, I just purchased a 580C and cannot get the boom? to lock in the upright position. It appears that the cylinders aren't traveling the last inch or so. The hyd. fluid level is ok. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,Bruce

pull the throttle half open or there abouts..... .pull you boom control back and just as the boom reaches the end of its travel push the boom control to the lower position. boom will come right into lock position

Tried it again this morning and the boom is not coming back far enough for the pins to even catch in the notches. Sorry I don't know the proper terms for the parts. The boom cylinders look like they should retract another inch or so and that might bring the boom back to where it should be. Even with half throttle when I bring the boom control back the boom stops short of the latch and loads the engine like when you reach the end of travel on any of the other cylinders. Any other ideas what might be wrong?
Thanks, Bruce

The backhoe boom has to go "over-center" to latch. As said before, have the throttle open a little bit. Then raise the boom (have the dipper all the way in), just as the boom nears the top position and before it completly stops quickly push the boom lever the other way (lower the boom position). The momentum of the booms travel will bring it over-center and as you put the control into the lower position the cylinders will again extend and the boom will continue into the transport latch position. Don't feel bad, I have seen experienced other brand backhoe operators get on a case and have all kinds of trouble with this until someone shows them the trick.

Just make sure no one is around to watch and keep playing with this and you will figure it out. To get the boom out of transport latch reverse the procedure.

Push boom lever to the lower position, this will again extend the cylinders, pull on the transport latch lever and continue to hold it in the open position while you ease the boom lever to the raise position (retracting the cylinders completly) then when the boom is clear of the latch turn loose of the latch control lever.

Sorry for the lengthy post but maybe this will help. Don't want you to get a bad opinion of the best backhoe brand (My opinion). When the case 580C was built it was so far ahead of the competition there was no comparison. Cat and JD are still playing catch up today to Case.

Good Luck.

Thanks!!! That worked. I guess I'm a little slow.
I was putting the boom control in the down position too late....The sequence was not intutive to me at all and I never would have figured that out without your help. Thanks again for the responses.
Bruce

I find not having the arm retracted fully
helps it swing up abit better.

I usually have my arm at about 70 degrees from the boom.
