420C problem

I was pulling stumps today and my 420 crawler stopped moving. No odd noises of any kind. The tranny shifts normally with the clutch in while the engine is running(I didn't try it with the clutch out). There is no power to the PTO. The clutch has free travel and resistance when depressed. This tractor sat for several years until I got it running last year. Could the clutch disk center hub have torn loose? Anybody have any ideas? TIA

If you don't have a reverser, it most likely tore the splines out of the propellor shaft, although it could have broken the clutch disc, but I would think you would hear that.

It has a reverser but I never use it because I was told the old ones gave trouble. Is the propellor accessible from the engine end or does the tractor have to be split? Thanks for your quick reply.

If you have a reverser, then the splines I am referring to do not exist. Check and see if you somehow got the reverser in nuetral. If so, that will yeild the results you describe. If used correctly, there is nothing wrong with the reversers, I have several, and never had a problem. If you are not smart enough not to grind them every time you shift, you will have problems. I have also torn down a 420 with no reverser, and there was 1/8" of the front of reverse ground off. This in not the fault of the machine, it is operator error.

Lavoy, you were right on; the reverser was in neutral. I neglected to say that the "stumps" had small trees attached. The chain was a little too short and the tip of a 4" maple landed beside the track. Apparently it hit the reverser lever. I'm shielded by the logging boom and its support over the seat, so this isn't as dangerous as it sounds. Thanks for your advice. It would have really stunk if I had pulled everything apart for nothing.
