I have this hd16 allis dozer with the 844 buda engine. when i bought it, it was dripping oil what looked to be out of the oil pan. he had just rebuilt the engine and told me that he didnt think that he got the oil pan gasket positioned just right. the other day i dropped the skid plate and with the dozer idling, crawled under to take a look. the oil is dripping out the flywheel housing instead of the oil pan. i assume without going in to look, that i have a rear crank seal leaking. Does anyone out there happen to agree or could it still be the oil pan somehow letting oil get over to the flywheel housing? he did say that there were no leaks till he remounted the pan. this oil pan does bolt up back there to this housing. if anyone could give some info, it might save me a lot of unnessary work. thanks..

I would bet it's the crank seal. I bought a HD 16 DC last summer at an auction in Va. for 900$ ,the motor was stuck and full of water. I put a 855 cummins in it and almost done putting tractor back together. I took the 844 buda flywheel and the cummins flywheel and machined them to mate up,then put it on the cummins so i could use the nuckle clutch and torque converter. Just cranked it the other day and everything worked good. I will probably sell the 844 buda .anyway I just seen yau'll talkin about a hd 16 and thought I'd talk about what i was doing to mine

No oil leaking before he re-installed the oil pan?!?!?!? I wouldn't think so!! Sounds like the rear main seal to me. Just my 2 cents. Good luck.
