Exhaust question for Oliver HG

I have a 1948 Oliver HG-42 and it has an exhaust leak at the connection between the exhaust pipe and the manifold. Can anyone tell me what this connection is supposed to look like? Should there be a gasket between the pipe and the manifold? The end of the exhaust pipe is fairly rusted out, can I have a new exhaust pipe fabricated (if so what does it look like) or is there someplace to buy a new one?

Thanks

The early ones had a straight pipe. No need to bother about a little leakage as most gas went straight up the pipe, as long as you don't put a hinged rain cap on it
The main problem is standing in the wet - the water runs down the outside of the pipe into the manifold. The ones with a shroud fitted to go over the manifold are obviously better in this respect.

If your HG is a 1948 I'm not sure if it has the later engine; same as used in the OC3? Later engine is the Hercules IXB3 and has a water pump, earlier engines does not have a water pump and are smaller. The new engines showed up in the beginning of 1949, I think. The IXB3 engine when used in the later HG and the OC3s had a stub pipe coming out of the exhaust manifold, and the muffler slipped over it and was clamped. I'm not sure what held the stub pipe it, but it may have been threaded. I've see a lot of HGs and OC3s that don't have their original exhaust manifolds, they have some sort of factory replacement that's different than the original. I've got two Cletracs like that. The non-original exhaust manifolds reads "Hercules" on it instead of "Oliver" and does not sweep up as high as the original. I also have one that has a offset carburetor adaptor because the carbruetor hits the magnetor without it - that's because the exhaust manifold is different.

Mine has a IXK3 engine and doesn't have a water pump. There is no name on the manifold that I've seen. I'm still at at loss as to how mine should attach.

Thanks

Gary:
Still new at this but understand OC3G-42 which I have is similar to the HG model; on mine exhaust pipe slips down over the manifold pipe, secured with a U clamp; muffler then attaches to the exhaust pipe. Not sure if yours is the same or what kind of pipe is proper. My exhaust pipe shows lots of rust, too, but still functional to support the muffler.
BTW...where are you located?. I am 20 Mi W of Salem. Don't seem to be many Oliver-Cletrac owners in our part of the country. PC

On mine there is a hole in the top on the manifold that the exhaust pipe sets in. There is a bolt that goes through the manifold, if the bottom of the exhaust pipe wasn't rusted off I would guess this holds it in the manifold, just not sure how to seal it.

This is a new toy for me too. Got it 3 weeks ago and just trying to get it running good. Right now the engine is running a little rough, spitting and backfiring. I have rebuilt the carburetor and am going to check the timing this weekend. Fixing the carburetor helped a little, also fixed the governer linkage so now when it bogs down the governer opens the throttle. Any suggestions on what I might look for would be appricated.

I live in St.Helens, north of Portland.

Another tho about that exhaust pipe; get a pipe that fits OUTSIDE the manifold pipe instead of one that goes inside of it, get a U-clamp to secure it in place. With that fitting arrangement sealing would be of little if any concern.
