I am changing the oil in the final drives of my JD-350B and the oil I just drained out looked a lot like 80w to 90w gear oil (which didn't suprise me).

Now I open the book to see exactly what I should replace it with and the book sais use "Type 303 Special Purpose Oil", which is hydraulic oil. (This does surprise me a little).

Is this correct or am I missing something. Any comments will be appriciated!

As I recall, the "type 303 special purpose" oil was not hydraulic oil; it was combination hydrauic and transmission oil which is different since it has extreme pressure additives for gears and is slightly heavier viscosity. Deere changed over from 303 to Hyguard a long time ago, back in the early to mid 70s as I recall. Be it 303, or Hyguard, or some combination hydraulic and transmission oil from the many other suppliers, you'll be fine. Deere recommened GL1 or GL5 80 or 90W gear oil also in warm weather conditions.
