I've inherited a rebuild of the steering clutches on a HD-7W. I've followed the manual and am ready to put in the clutches/brakes and then the final drive pinions (also called axles). Having never done any of it but being pretty handy, I need to know the best way to 1. put in bearings for the pinion and 2. drive the pinion in. Do I need a special tool for the pinion like the book says or can I make one.Mucho thanks...

Simple answer. Freeze the cones in dry ice and use the old cones as a template and drive them in with a quick whap and you re in place. For the bearings, heat until 250 degrees and they should just about drop on to the shaft. The only issue will be bearing preload. Use what you have removed to see how close you are. I would advise that on all shimms that you have them polished and ready to go. By polising them they will fit like new and will seal better. I use an air tool with one of those brillo pad things on it. Also it pays to have extra shims around especially the thinner ones. New bearings are not always the same for preload on them.

When putting back in all of the shafts you can do the preload for any outboard bearings by makeing a jug and doing it in the shop and then take it out there.

They are really simple to put in place on AC and very accessable.

Good luck

Thanks for the info. So I just take the pinions and stick them in dry ice, they shrink then I can put them in. I guess they will also fit in the keyed driven hubs?
