My question is
I have a 2-53 Detroit in a 440icd 1960.
What is the physical appearance difference between The N series and the S series?

I am about to replace the injectors.
There is a stamped number on each injector
Also the fuel in line and the fuel out line are offset from one another, I would say at a diagonal line to one another.
Where the bottom end screws off there is a hexagon for a wrench to fit on. On the hexagon, there is one small grove all the way around that is machine in to it
There is also a tag inset in the top side of the unit that says 35.

Are these S aeries or N series.???

I'm wondering if some one put N series injectors at one time on this engine.?

If not will the N series work better???

Some one told me that they make a 4 valve and a 2 valve 2-53 ??, and that the 4 valve engine injectors will not work because they will interfere with the rack above.??
Is this true??
Thanks in advance
Scott

Thanks for all the info, I ordered new Injectors this morning. None in stock, Detroit will be making them. will be here next week.
Detroit said that even if the sleaves and pistons are not N series, that the up graded N series injectors would be a good thing to do. Thanks much to all.

Don't put her together without the "N" sleevs and pistons. It would be a waste of time and effort plus you would always regrett not doing it when having the chance.

The n-series will run better than the s-series, they bolt in the same, You have to change the fuel line's on the injector's as well. They are two different sizes, they n-series are offset, the s-series are they same, side by side. It will not have no effect on the old piston's and liners.

Hey Scott, call Covington Detroit in Charlotte, NC and talk to Bruce about your problem. He's about the only parts man I know of that still knows anything about the two stroke engines. Most of the time if I need something he knows it off the top of his head without having to look it up except to cross to the newest part numbers.
Their number is 704-596-8000.

The diffence in the injectors is primarly the spray tip on the injector, there is a more atomizing tip on the n series. better performance!

Don't forget to get a timing tool for the injectors when you replace them. They tool is a small pin that fits in the top of the injector body and you adjust the rocker arm height to the top of the pin.

The injectors all mix and match without interference. As the "S" equipment is obsolete there may have been N35's installed. Don't go larger unless swapping in the connecting rods that spray cool the pistons. All bets are off with final drive life however with N40 to N50's. Smallest engine with 4 valves was the 3-53. Pullers with 435 JD's have cut 3 & 4 cylinder four valve heads down to two cylinders.

I just went through this with my dealer. If they they just say 35, they are s-series...they n's will say N35.. they fit the same, at least mine did. I rebuilt mine with all n-series parts...starts and runs excellent...To switch injectors, detroit wants a core and they won't take your s-series as cores. So you pay the core charge or find some old n-series injectors somewhere..doesn't matter what size.

good luck
Kevin
