For what its worth last night I whent to a auction thinking of buying a dozer. They had a J.D. 1010 Diesel and the pads were worn bad had a angel blade which looked good. It had a lot of hours on it and lots of guys looking at it. It sold for $3,400.So what do you think of that price? This was sold in eastern Pa. around Bethlehem Pa.
Thanks
Ron

I would be interested in pictures of a ripper attachment for a 1010.I would like to buy one, build one or possibly trade my winch for one.If anyone would like to send pictures I would appreciate it.I know where there are 9 1010's within a few miles of me and a 2010 but not one has a ripper on it.Go figure!

I just posted a photo of the rear-mounted #35 Deere ripper on my 1960 Deere 1010 crawler-loader.
I've also got the parts manual.
Photo is on this site under implements, or use this URL:

Runing and usable 1010 crawlers in my area of Central New York tend to bring $3500 - $4500 with a straight blade, and up around $6000 with a 6-way blade.

I just bought a 1963 1010 crawler/loader at an auction for $1,700.00. Gas engine (stuck) with scarfier ripper on the back and a brush rake attachment(nice)for the bucket. The track and all under carriage components are in very good shape. Orig owner was at the auction and said "it ran excellent when I last shut her down two years ago". Will pick it up today and find out what I "REALLY" bought. This is more fun then a kid has at Christmas.

I bought one similar last summer. A 1960 Deere 1010 crawler/loader with the #35 ripper on the rear. Has gas engine, hydraulic reverser, and a ROPS. Original owner had it and babied it since new, but it caught fire from mid-engine up. I took a chance and paid $2000 for it. I wound up rebuilding the engine, replacing all the hoses, repacking a few cylinders, repacking the hydraulic track tensioners, rebuilding the hydraulic pump, and rewiring all. Wound up putting $1000 in parts into it. So, if my labor has no value, I've got $3000 into it. Nice little machine, though it's underpowered.

A gentleman I know near me used to work at a Deere dealer when the 1010's first came out. He said they had a lot of complaints about loack of power. Somehow they came up with a fix, don't know if Deere suggested it or if they figured it out on their own.
What they did was to install a 2010 deck and pistons. He told me that they had to have an engine shop open up the bottom of the block slightly to accomodate the larger deck. THey did not change carb, manifold, cam or anything else, just the deck and pistons. He said that really livend them up and made a hell of a good crawler out of it. You don't get so much power as to be hard on things, but got a nice increase in torque.

Yeah, I heard about that when I was working for a Deere dealer. Never tried it though, and now a days it would be too expensive if you had to buy the parts new. The 1010 was capable of 36 PTO horsepower, and the later 350 with the 3 cylinder engine had 38 PTO horse, not much difference. The 350 crawler-loaders were about as dead as the 1010s, so I wonder if Deere felt the drivetrain couldn't stand any more power. As they were, the reversers had some weak spots. Deere beefed them up a little with the 350B and on. 450 crawler-loaders were underpowered also, but Deere was quick to up the engine size and horsepower on them - I assume because the entire drivetrain was much stronger than the 1010 or 350 - especially the HL-R transmission. First 450 engine was basically a four cylinder version of the 350 engine. But, then the engine size was upped, and then a turbo was added. 450B or 450C turbo was a powerful machine, loader or dozer. With the 350s, I guess when the 350D came out the engine size was finally upped a bit - I don't know if they beefed up the reverser anymore or not.
