I had posted a few questions about D7-14A's last week. Yesteraday I drove one. My question .... when we first started it then wanted to shift either the Forward - nuetral - reverse lever OR the five speed shift lever you had to grind it to get it into gear. Depending on which one was already in gear first the second one did the grinding. Owner said this was common when it was first started up and once it was warm it was better. This did seem to be the case. It did shift much much better after I had drove it. He said it had to do with the oil warming up in the oil clutch. JUST WANTED TO KNOW IF THIS WAS SORT OF NORMAL OR IF SOMETHING WAS OUT OF ADJUSTMENT??? Like I said it seemed to work better after I had drove it around a field. Just getting it into gear the first few initial times. Thanks for your response.

Maybe the clutch brake needs adjusted or replaced. Try pushing foward on the clutch lever before shifting. Another thing to check is, the clutch oil the proper type and not milky.

I wondered about a clutch brake. Is it external? Behind the clutch? Just seemed like the clutch even though disengaged was still wanting to spin the driven plates. And, with the oil and everything surely it would do just that if the clutch brake wasn't working. After I had driven it some it did get better or maybe almost normal. Anyother commnents appreciated. Thanks. andy

The clutch brake should be a small drum on the clutch output shaft and a shoe to go against it when the lever is pushed fully forward. The trans is a collar shift and a bit harder to get into gear than a syncromesh but a lot stronger. Pull the shift lever towards the gear you want lightly, when you feel it starting to grind, force forward on the clutch lever then pull hard into gear.
